How long do you keep your ship commissioned?

Hey fellow STO-ers, :/

Newish to the game, not to games, and definitely not star trek. Currently enjoying riding solo, have chatted with a few other players along the way, but must get into a fleet.

Was wondering, though, how long do others keep their ships, i like many others i hope, build little back stories for my characters, and on rising to Lt Commander, i took command of a Rhode Island Class vessel, which for my character was her first command, which i plan to keep as my ship until i reach captain.

Do others trade up straight away? or do you find you-self grown attached to your ship? I know I have

When I got the Akira class, I used it in the kerrat missions and the odd mission I had trouble finishing, but I mainly used my Connie refit as my main all the way up to getting my Galaxy class. I have a Soveriegn now, but am still using the galaxy, only switching around for some variety in gameplay or missions. But I always state a reason for the switch in my logs (Yes, I keep lots of logs). Such as the DarkFyre (the Connie) getting retired from service due to her age. Or the Chicago suffering massive damage and being forced to abandon it, and helping out on the Sentinel who came to my rescue until the Chicago is repaired, thus the switch back to the Galaxy.

I've kept some of my ships. I have 3 Feds and 2 Klingons. Both Klingons still have they're D7's (one's a Capt. and the other just made Bring-a-deer General). On Fed side I have one Admiral and 2 Capt's. At least two of them have kept their Connies and one has kept the little starter ship and renamed it Gay Deceiver (after a character/ship from a Heinlein book). I use it as a kind of runabout sometimes just for fun. Trips to Memory Alpha or just down to the corner store heheheheh. They all keep their Excelsior refit until they get to the retrofit.

BTW - how do you keep logs? I haven't come across that...

Click on the starfleet logo under the map to bring up the whole mission select type screen. If you click on the Logs tab and select personal, you can then enter a new log. You also have the option of entering a supplimental log, but they never show up for me, I always have to create a new log. Personal seems to be th eonly log type you can create yourself.

Until I need room because I'm not buying more ship slots. I have an NX Class, Exeter Class and Akira Class (set to current).

I will not decommision my NX because I actually paid for it. I'm a little weary about making Captain. There are NO ships I want at that rank. And I'm sure the game is designed to where I will need a ship with a better hull to survive the next episode.

I think this was done purposefully. So, when we spend all that time trying to not be a Captain to get a new ship at Rear Lower Admiral LH, you'll be begging to 'buy' a better ship.

Honetsly I feel the whole ranking system is jacked up. Captains command starhips not Admiral's. You should have access to all ship at Captain.

I strongly feel that from the ranks ('O' = Officer level):
  1. O1 - O2 = Shuttles (lots of ground missions and some space combat).
  2. O3 - O4 = Shuttles / Light Escorts (good mix of ground / space combat missions).
  3. O5 - O6 = Heavy Escorts / All Cruisers (depending on grade) / Science Vessels.
  4. O7 - O8 = Heavy Cruisers only commanding shuttles/escorts and other cruisers.

So basically what 'Enswines' (O-1's) do and LTJG's are do small missions like diplomacy finding people. Thye take commands from higher ranking players. Such as 'attack, protect, diversions a support rank). They are limited to Sector Space in the SOL system.

LT's and LCDR's direct the lower ranks in combat and can assign missions. They are combat support for battle groups and are commanded by ADM's. They may travel outside the SOL system.

CDR's and CAPT's go on exploration / combat / search and rescue / aid missions. They can go to any system.

RADM's (rank depending) Can send commands to all lower ranking players. If lower ranking player refuse enough orders they can lose a grade rank or even a full rank (game logic). These Admirals can have three Bot ships of which to command. They can be any ship and each ship will have shuttle craft. Think of it like Commander mode in Battlefield 2 the PC game.

Anyway just my 'BRIEF' ideas layed out.

I grow quite attached to my ships and keep the Tier V ones for STFs for an ungodly amount of time. I see no reason to purchase an expensive c-store ship if fully optimized, my free ships work as well as or better than most others.

I have a Royal Navy star cruiser with its own backstory (Foreign military contribution or future Starfleet ship prototype), a pre-WW2 USN-named assault cruiser that writes its own story (through ESTF performance) and now a fleet escort with its own fanart.

Instead of writing stories for them (that barely anyone will read) I make youtube videos of them to prove that they are functional builds. These are the ship logs I created so far:

Ark Royal 2409 (Escort Battlecruiser)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnMsnH5GGUg

Lexington (Assault Cruiser)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3-ApouPLks

Yukikaze (War Destroyer)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw-sIjY9g-M

Ship designations like BCE and DWG are not from STO but from SFB/SFC2, very old tabletop and computer Star Trek starship combat games. No point pretending to be a peacetime diplomatic force when peace is non existent and diplomacy is useless without the arms to back it up (deterrence).

The problem with me is I can't seem to find like-minded roleplayers who focus more on starships and military strategy than characters. And I don't like character roleplay for the fact it degenerates into small talk rapidly. So I stick to training ESTF teams and keep up to date on post-modern military concepts to make tactical coordination as easy as ABC.

I Keep all of mine and change as soon as I rank up. My ultimate goal for my first character was to get an Advanced Escort. I got it, I love it.

It would be nice if they implemented a "Tier Exchange" system where you could trade ships in for tier points and use those to purchase different ships that you might like. I could see me trading my 1-4 tier ships for two tier 5 ships. It would give you a chance to try other types that you couldn't get because you had to choose one at that tier.

once I get to the right ship
I plan to keep them pretty much forever (for example my most advanced character has a Galaxy class and is STAYING with it , another is after the Vulcan science vessel)
