Atrox Carrier Captains opinions wanted

Hello all,
I'm specifically looking for your personal opinions/recommendations about the Caitian Atrox Carrier. I'm looking at possibly buying it soon.

I'm a science captian, and I've already figured out I do best in PVP using a combination of Engineering and Science boff abilities to tank and heal. And I can tank fairly well. I'm looking for a Science oriented ship where I can use a Commander Science boff, and continue to be able to tank effectively. And as far as I can tell, the Atrox is the answer.

So please let me know what you think of your Atrox carriers, and if you'd recommend it, considering that I prefer the tanking/healing/science play style. If you have another suggestion of a good ship that will fill that role, let me know as well.
Thanks.

I am a Tac player who has owned the ship since it came out. Just yesterday I was playing in the new starbase missions and I am able to take on a full group of enemy ships without dropping below 90% of heath. This ship is my favorite. I am able to tank just about anything and still be able to kill. Also, I am one of the few people with this ship that uses dual heavy cannons. I really recommend using cannons and turrets with this ship. one tac team and a rapid fire and you have all the damage you need.
To end, anybody that wants to tank this is the ship for you. Hope this helps!

I use the Carrier with my sci captain alot and the results are extremely awesome for the atrox. since it gives tons of customability with you hangar ships and also combining those fighters with a photonic fleet brings a big ammount of DPS to the table. I myself like the advanced peregrine fighters because you get 2 cannons and a quantum torp on each of these 12 fighters you can have active at a time. This ship is a must buy.

I, too, am a Science captain, and I fly the Atrox as my primary ship. I find the Atrox to be highly survivable and flexible. I hesitated buying it because of the turn rate, but I find that with my CC oriented play style and the ability to launch fighter/shuttles, I don't find its turn rate that much of a liability.

I run with Hazard Emitters, and Aux to Structural for shield heals, and Emergency Power to Shields and Transfer Shield Strength for shield heals. I also run Tac Team, Eng Team, and Sci Team. Because of their shared cool downs, I will normally run Tac Team whenever it is up, and use Eng and Sci Teams only if needed for extra heals or specific debuffs need to be cleared. This setup also gives me decent flexibility for healing myself without sacrificing the ability to keep others alive since everything but EPS is castable on others as well.

For fighters, I have two hangers of the Advanced Stalker Fighters, two hangers of the Advanced Delta Fliers, and one hanger each of the Advanced Peregrine Fighters, Danube Shuttles and Reinforced Shield Repair Units. I share these (except for the Stalkers) with my Armitage which I fly as my second ship.

For DPS, I will typically fly two hangers of Adv. Stalkers. If I do not have the Peregrines equipped on my Armitage, I will sometimes fly one hanger of Adv. Stalkers and one hanger of Adv. Peregrines. I may also fly both hangers of Adv. Deltas or a mix of Stalkers and Deltas. For more CC, one hanger of Adv. Stalkers and one of Danubes. For extra healing, I will do one of Adv. Stalker and one of Reinforced Shield Repair Units. I may get two of each hanger I only currently have one of, but that would be more to keep me from having to go back to the Ship Selector to get one of them off my Armitage if I had it equipped there than to run two of the same of those. Doing so would reduce my DPS (except for an extra Adv. Peregrine, obviously), which I would rather not do. Having this many options makes the ship very flexible.

For instance when doing the new Fleet Alert event, I will fly with two hangers of DPS fighters on Attack or Intercept mode, but when doing the Blockade event, I will run with the Adv. Stalker/RSRU setup and put the hangers in Escort mode. When I first approach a freighter, I will target it, launching fighters if needed (i.e., if they didn't keep up or were destroyed in the last encounter). This cause the RSRUs to go to the freighter and the fighters to engage what is attacking it. I then cast TSS and Tac Team on the freighter as a minimum (more heals if needed), then I turn my attention to the attackers. I typically run with two Gravity Wells, but sometimes I run with Gravity Well and Scramble Sensors. I use these to start to take the heat off of the freighters. I also have Tractor Beam plus the Borg set Tractor Beam. I have Energy Siphon to round out the mix and to boost my power levels.

For my other Tac ability, I have Beam Overload. I have foregone equipping torpedo's because the Breen Transphasic Cluster Launcher is the equivalent of being able to launch mines using Dispersal Pattern Beta II (12 mine net), but do so from a distance. This essentially gives me a free Kinetic damage Boff Power so that I don't have to use one of my two Tac slots for High Yield/Spread, and it is a higher power than I could normally equip since Dispersal Pattern Beta II is a Lt. Commander level power, and I have only a Lieutenant Tac station. In the past, this has been effective since PvE enemies rarely blew up the destructible torpedo or the mines before they deployed and attacked. I noticed on Tribble when testing Season 6 and now on Holodeck, they seem to be more able to destroy the torpedo in transit or the mines as they deploy. Thus, whether this strategy will continue to be a viable option is up for review. When I run with Scramble Sensors, it is a bit less of an issue as they are less likely to stop it when they are under the confuse effect, and the boost to shield penetration for Transphasics is a factor, but the jury is still out.

I find this layout to be highly survivable and a beast for control. Its hull strength, the fact that it is a Science oriented ship (power levels, BOff station layout, and free subsystem targeting powers), and the flexibility with the two hanger bays overrode my concerns about its turn rate. While I love to fly my Armitage or LRSV-R for the added maneuverability, I just don't miss it when I fly the Atrox -- except when I am headed one way and the freighters come in behind me :).

I found it well worth the money.

I think it's a great ship.

But it is one of the few ships that don't get a Fleet Variant. The Heavy Escort Carrier does get a Fleet Version.

And in an Era where we are moving to 10 Console ships, your going to be slightly behind with a 9 Console ship. I don't think a single Console makes that big of a difference but. The Multi Vector Advanced Escort is in the same boat with not getting an upgrade to Fleet, not sure what other ships aren't being upgraded although the Assault got dropped, especially annoying since it's BOFF Layout got put on the T3 4 Nacelle monstrosities that pass for a Heavy Cruiser.

Do you think this is a precurser to some kind of retirement in the futere?

Just realized you said this...you can load cannons on the Atrox? That's awesome! The probability of my getting this ship is increasing...

The Atrox cannot load Dual Cannons and Dual Heavy Cannons.

If you want Dual cannons carrier, maybe you'd like to take the flavor of the month out for a spin instead?

In fact, it can.

kylesal24 07-16-2012 07:22 PM

Yep it can load dual heavy cannons. I go with 2 phaser dual heavy cannons and 1 quantum torpedo in the front. Then 3 phaser turrets in the back. 1 tac team and 1 rapid fire, plus me being tac I have all those skills to help with damage. I put 2 phaser relays in my tac consoles.
