Will you wait Seasons 7-9 for Dr. Cryptic to operate on PVP?

Q: (russel1997) What is the state of PvP in STO?

Dstahl: My personal opinion is that PvP has never been a strong suit of STO or of Cryptic Studios in the past. Over the last year, the studio has been coming to terms with this and has dedicated internal development resources to analyzing and building a fun PvP prototype. This has helped us learn and understand the tech necessary to make PvP a healthy part of our games.

That effort was largely successful internally and helped identify how we should proceed with PvP in the future. Earlier this year, STO jumped at the opportunity to be the first Live Cryptic game to use this new tech and started work on revamping a space PvP map that could serve as a test bed for players to provide feedback. That test map was nearly finished when ?Gozer? left the team. It has since passed to another designer on the team and he is coming up to speed on everything that had been developed over the past several months.

At this point, we do not feel that rushing something out right away is going to help. In order to improve PvP for the players who currently do like it, it will need more extensive testing time than we?ve typically allowed in the past. The first step is going to be putting a test map out for players sometime in the next few months and then seeing where we go from there. Only after we believe the existing PvP community confirms our opinion that this is an improvement to PvP, will we consider putting serious development effort towards a releasable map set.

Thus, the writing on the wall is that PvP will continue as is for the duration of Season 6 and will slowly begin to improve in Seasons 7 through 9, with the end goal of having an awesome and fun PvP ?battleground? like map by the time Season 9 ships. Not exactly the best news if you are waiting for new PvP maps, but at least it gives a clear view of what we are doing.

For anyone who didn't catch the latest Ask Cryptic. I thought it would be nice to round up the overall thoughts on the position of Cryptic as stated by Mr. Stahl from the PvP community. I would like to mention that its already been stated in the organized PVP channel that we might lose some valued members and inadvertently some valued PvP fleets from the game during seasons 7-9. This could irrevocably hurt pvp for good. But let's hope I'm as wrong about this as most of the community seems to agree I am about Battle Cloak on my defiant. CUZ I DON'T WANNA PLAY KLINGON!!

Hey, I love that ship. I know and have other ships that are better for pvp right now. But I think everyone would love to fly their favorite ship competetively in PVP. So I stick with it!!:P /end rant

Anyway....my question to the community. What is your opinion of Cryptic's approach and time frame to fix pvp?

dontdrunkimshoot 08-12-2012 03:01 AM

well, its not being removed, so thats good. bort and other systems dudes are tweaking stuff based on out feedback, branflakes dared to post in a thread here, and fleet marks for pvp sound like they are on the way. it aint bad right now, it could be worse, a lot worse. im having fun with my 2 new fleet ships, keeping it interesting so far. it would be REALLY nice if they would just make a new map or 2 for pvp wile they are making all that story content for season 7. i think we are due a single bone being thrown to us. the space map in that mission 'alpha' would make a great new cap and hold map for example, along with that prison being a ground map.

My opinion is that I doubt we'll see anything new that's PvP specific.

Yeah, that 'Alpha' map would do nicely. Maybe throw in a few more pieces of debris and some more random gas clouds. Make for interesting scenery.

That just triggered an interesting thought. I wonder if it would be possible to program gas clouds to add to a player's stealth rating/reduce an enemy's ability to penetrate the cloud? Make it harder to see ships lurking in a gas cloud? Would add an interesting dynamic to PvP arenas with such features.

Rather have them operate on the game it self.

I almost hope they will... Because then:
- Fed players would see that Battlecloak is no better than any other cloak.
- I could demand they give the BoP
- The same number of weapons as the Def
- The same number of tac consoles as the Def
- Better turn than the Def beacuse it has less hull, or a hull/shield increase to Def level

I'll accept having fewer boffs as a tradeoff for having universals... Even tho the traditional escort setup is the best for a BoP anyway, so for me the universals are a pure loss of an ensign... :/ (imo)

No. I won't.

In 2 months, X Com will be released, and likely sooner than this, Mechwarrior will also be released.

By the way unlike this Face Roll Deved, game Mechwarrior is actually you know good. And is all about the pvp. Because that is all there is in Mechwarrior, is pvp.

To quote someone, Cryptic at this point would have to send me Ann Hathaway bound and gagged in her catwoman outfit, to my door for me to ever want to spend money on this game again.

Quite likely I'm going to go play RIFT long before sto gets it's act together again. As much as I love this community, I've had the care and love ripped out of me by a heartless bunch of Morons that can't dev their way out of a paper bag. We also can't forget Guild Wars 2 is coming, so frankly there's even less point in sticking around here.

Cryptic had their chance. They had over 2 years to fix this mess. All they have proven, with their repeated Stupid Statements by Captain Gecko, and Jman both is that they are so utterly clueless that you shouldn't trust them to do anything right with this game.

Yeah, didnt dstahl also say season six was gonna be pvp oriented as well. Fool me once shame on you, fool me for two years and we're all just a bunch of idiots for believing the garbage we're being fed.

"we're working on a map that will release 3 seasons from now"???
Are you serious? Yeah, a new map is really that hard to develope...

I haven't logged on in weeks and really haven't missed the game one bit. I miss hanging out with my fleetmates, and that's about it. Cryptic has run the game into the ground to the point that a major overhaul would be required to even salvage pvp. Since cryptic neither cares about pvp, nor is capable of pulling off something of that magnitude (they can't even fix FAW for gods sake), I doubt pvp will ever come out of the state of disrepair it's in.

It's easy to take something for granted when you can't see what a good thing you have. Pvp in Sto is a perfect example of this. It's got such Great potential in a game platform such as Sto, but cryptic just pissed away it's potential

baudl 08-12-2012 07:04 AM

well...it will be grindy...thats for sure. Maybe Do 100 Arena matches, get something useless...that is buggy, and not worth it. Or pay for a "i-win" button, only 5000 zen! Or a PVP specific lock box...

i mean they have shown, that they do not run out of horrible gamedesign ideas...ever.

Or they take some good ideas from the community...and completely ignore it.

PS: Best idea...new arena ranking system will force you to do ground combat
