Flying a Eng in a beam-related Escort-ideas?

Dont laugh, its for my own personal use, I don't wanna have 2 Tac/Escorts, so, I figure I'd try a Eng in a Escort using beams, as the Eng +power and reduce power drain abilities might work nice with a multi-beam setup. Now, I was thinking a DBB, 1 or 2 torps fore, and 1 or two arrays. Or 2 DBBs, a torp and a beam array. Rear, two beam arrays and a torp or mine launcher, not sure which yet. Any thoughts?

Beams are beams are beams are beams. You will always have power problems since beam arrays and DBBs always and I say again ALWAYS drain lots of power. If you MUST use beams, then I would say all fore weapons DBBs and a torp, then the rear weapons turrets.

I mean its not a bad plan.... it really "only" affects DPS...

Now if you built in Target Subsystems III to things like weapons and shields.. most bosses and structures like the gate would be neutered..

Which actually brings up a thought... the Armitage would of been a perfect Escort/Beam ship if they balanced out the fact its a carrier and lowered its turnrate...

I think you'd be better off running 3xDHC up front with 1 DBB, and 3xturrets in the rear.

You can then run 2xBOL3 in your boff layout, along with some weapon batteries, and make maximum use of Nadion Inversion with regular back to back BOL3 strikes, while still shredding things with cannon DPS.

Why would somebody laugh? But you're funny though, lol. Usually, other than for fun, the engineer is mostly efficient in a cruiser when he can throw a heal on a team mate and apply constant pressure on the enemy. Second, a beamscort will never deal so much damage as a cannon one. To answer your question though, I would use all front 4 weapons as dbl beam bank and regular beams in aft. Use 2 fire at will 3 and 2 bo2 and fill up the remaining tac slots with some APO, apd/apb. Put some eps console(s) in your engi slot, it will regenerate your power much faster and when you can use nadion inv and eps transfer. Just remember that is won't be an efficient escort, at least not as efficient as a cannon one and definitely far from a tacscort. But you should be slightly better in damage than in a cruiser.

Edit: better, have 2 sets of 2 Tac bridge officers handy, one set with Faw 3, the other with BO3, or BO2. So you won't have the global cooldown for all those beam abilities. You could also add a torp in front (I'd use some chronitrons since all your tac consoles should be energy type) to slow down the target or some mines in the rear. Definitely using 2 faw and 2 bo is not a smart way to go, what was I thinking, lol...

The thing is I don't wanna just run Tac/Escort, Eng/Cruiser, Sci/Sci over and over again.

You don't have to. An engineer in an escort is generaly more durable than a tac in an escort they just dont have the alpha strike ability. A sci in an escort can bring some interesting debuff abilitys into play. It really depends on what you want to do.

As for a beamscort I would avoid fire at will if I were using beam arrays, you're way too squishy to aggro everything on the map. If you go with DBB and aft turrets then faw can be useful since you will have a foreward only arc.

My main is an engineer and this is what I ran when I was rolling out in a Patrol Escort. I still run the same setup in my Fleet Patrol Escort, sometimes swapping out the DBB for another DHC.

The thing is, you need to take into consideration that we have 2 different main types of setups in this game.

(1) Career choice.
(2) The ship you're a captain of.

After that, it starts to spiderweb.

Escorts are fast, so if you want to run beams, I would suggest a wide arc around the target, taking advantage of your speed and the beams' 250 degree range.

However, Engineers are tankers. Most likely (I haven't tried this, which is why I'm saying "most likely"), if you're an Engineer in an escort beam boat, you should be able to circle around your target w/out creating too much aggro, while using your Engineering abilities to deal with the aggro if it gets generated. In other words, your target won't get destroyed very fast, but neither will you.

My suggestion, should you decide to go the beam route... nvm. I don't even know what ship you're in.

How many slots do you have on your fore and aft? What's the base hull and shield? Basically, which ship are you trying this out on? I don't really know what your alpha attack or defense would be like w/out that information.

It is perfectly do-able. Heck I used to run a polaron beam sci-scort focused on AP:B and subsystem targeting with rift the weaken everything in sight. My DPS may not have been the best but doubling the entire teams sure was fun!

If flying solo PvE do whatever you want it won't matter one bit. If you want to do Elite STFs and be useful though pick a role, I would suggest tanky dps myself.

7x Beam Arrays (or 6 and a torpedo).
Anything that helps your defense rating es good.
Attack Pattern Delta and Beta to help your team and tanking.
Subsystem targeting is always good stuff especially if paired with polarons or things like energy syphon.
Fire at Will is good too if you will be the tanky type.
Depending on your ship you may want to pack something 'interesting'.
Just be sure to have 2 copies of Epower to shields and some form of hull heal with your capt. abilities you can tank anything an STF can throw at ya for the most part.

And remember, best way to DPS in an escort vs a cube is to take the high yield torpedo in the face while nearby, let 'em kill themselves

Spam FAW or beam overloads and Attack Pattern: Beta 2/3 for PvE.

Dunno what to tell your for PvP other than it's not gonna get you anywhere fast, usually.
