The Never Ending Battle

First, a little about me.
I've been playing STO for a little less than six months, it's the first MMO I've ever played. Because I'm a Star Trek fan, I love everything about it even mining Dilithium. I'm a pretty good STF'er but I need to learn a thing or two about setting up a ship for PVP. I die more than I kill, but my skill is not why I decided to post my very first thread to any forum... EVER!

So here's the deal.
Occasionally I see people in the chat box commenting on the state of PVP, "No one PVPs anymore...","You mean people still do that?", and so on. There may be a reason for the decline of participation in PVP, (I think I saw a post on that, I'll have to check), but I like PVP for two reasons:
  1. It's fun to battle real humans
  2. The PVP missions reward large Dilithium

But here's the reason I might never do PVP again.
In the last two weeks I've played 20 matches of every type. (space, ground,C&H,arena, assault) 20 matches total. The result of all 20 were exactly the same. Not one person on my team ever scored a point...EVER!! Some of my team mates were the top shooters in previous matches....but they were on the other team!
Now, I'm not whining, this is not a complaint because win or loose, a good battle is fun.
Knowing the outcome...Is NOT. Is this a bug or just the luck of the draw? Have I slipped into the Mirror Universe? Maybe I've been cursed for telling one too many Gorn jokes on DS9. Regardless of the reason, if I can't get on a team that can at least score a point or two...Then there's gonna be one less PVPer.

Thanks for reading, your thoughts are welcome.

Are you a Fed or an evil Klingun?

I would recommend sticking to FvF pvp while you are learning the ropes, & practicing mostly in the Cap & Holds until you get the hang of timing your alphas & defensive buffs. Cap & Holds don't end at a certain number of deaths, & give you more of an opportunity to learn what works without costing your team the match.
In an arena, easy kills are noticed & wiped again & again, which makes learning in them very disheartening, & difficult. Welcome to PVP!

One join Organized PvP... the link is still sticked in this section. The origional idea of the channel was to setup premade fights, it still works for that. At this point though pretty much everyone that PvPs is at least watching that chat... ask for teams there, many nights people from Opvp team up to que... you may not win every match with them, but playing with people watching your back is a good place to start in getting a few wins.

Second post a help thread here... post your Captain type, Ship type, weapon load, Boff load, and Doff load. Read what people have to say about what you have been doing, take there suggestions, incorperate them if you can, tweek them and make them your own. One of the best things about PvP in any MMO is the constant tweeking to stay current. If you are not wanting or willing to be constantly tweeking your builds you likely won't do well in PvP... however many of us find that the most entertaining part of the game.

Anyway welcome to STO PvP, thanks for queing up I hope you stick with it... the game can use more good pvp players... and becoming good at anything takes practice.

I started getting on PVP at the most basic level the end of last year. and I was so aweful! Then I started joining the queues with some fleetmates that had a bit more experience. And I was still aweful! But I did get a few kills and saw how a few things worked.

No matter how good you are - teamwork always trumps a few better skilled players. Join the OrganizedPVP channel and hang around a bit, there are always people who are making premades and are happy to explain things/answer Q's.

I'm a Fed Engineer on a Heavy Metal Star Cruiser.

Thanks for the advice guys. I know I'm still pretty new and I have some homework to do but like I said in my original post, my issue is not with my skills, it's that NO ONE on the team I'm in is scoring ANY points.

Prior to the last two weeks ( 20 matches) it was win some, loose some and I'm not just talkin' 'space', it's the same results on 'ground' and I fancy myself a decent ground guy.
My skills aside, I've seen players who obviously know what their doing wipe up, only to do jack when we're on the same team. The end game results are beginning to look very consistent. I think the Romulans are involved.lol

And yes, I agree, Teamwork trumps the individual.
Oh, bye the way, A C&H team I was in won the match...but no one scored any points. The oppositions influence ran out before ours, go figure.

Those damn romulans. lol
Don't know much about ground.. but ya as others have said if your running against teams when your team is not really teamed before hand and calling targets heals ect... its an uphill battle... yes even good players have a hard time against any other team...

OK on the build I'm not sure what it is your running... but read though some of the cruiser posts in this section... I have to be honest with you though. Many people come into pvp with the very wrong idea of what an Engi is supposed to be doing in PvP... Your a Healer, if your not playing a engi in a star cruiser that way your not doing it right.

Having said that a well played engi cruiser in a pug match should be able to keep most if not all of your team mates up very well... the main issue you will have when you are pugging will be ending up on teams that are either also all in heal heavy boats or just plain suck... no offense to anyone... but in your current setup you are pretty much relying on others to do your killing... no matter what you do build wise that combo will just never be good at killing anyone at all.... like I say though until the Oddy was released the star cruiser was about the best fed healer there was.

Are you playing it as a healer now ?
If you are are you having a real hard time keeping your teams escorts up... if you are this is where Opvp might come in handy... finding unteamed escorts that wouldn't mind teaming up with a healer if if your a new one shouldn't be that hard. :)

If you are looking to do dmg and score kills yourself, you are likely going to want to roll a tactical... or perhaps even a sci.

Engi Cruiser is a good way to learn pvp... cause with some helpful advise you should be able to be very hard to kill... and in a pug, if you have the right heals loaded and get good at keeping teammates up you will win lots of matches. It is a forgiving playstyle in someways... but really you need to find a good escort friend to heal )many puggin escorts do silly things like fly 20k away from there healer, team with people before hand and they won't do that)... think of your current captain / ship combo as a WW II B-17... you can stay in the fight for a long time, and dish out a ton of dmg if you can stay in the fight... but to not get shot down by the first German Ace that sees you floating along you are going to need an escort... this game has them and has even named them properly. ;)

I knew you were a Fed! I was going to tell you've fought against the new fleet vessels in tha last days, but I realized you are doing also ground pvp...uhm...maybe bad luck?
Anyway, follow the advice of people like Husanak and Ghostyandfrosty, you can't go wrong!
And, Fed comrade, be ready because a nasty surprise is awaiting you...Chang is better than Kirk in this game.
So teamplay, a strong defense and a good set of keybinds are the key to win against the evil Klinguns...sometimes...:D
