Microsoft Surface Tablet And STO
Does anyone have the Microsoft Surface tablet yet, and does it run Star Trek Online?
If it does, does it run well? Graphics settings? Etc... |
According to MS website the 'Surface with Windows 8 Pro' isn't out yet, and Windows RT can't run standard x86 PC programs (like STO).
Though, based on it having '3rd Gen Intel Core i5 Processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000', it will run STO, but not great. The graphics chip has about the same performance as the minimum specifications list on the website (last I checked anyway). The i5 should be OK, unless this version has been nerfed for more battery runtime. Expect to have to turn things down or lower the resolution to play STO at a decent framerate. |
The Surface RT can only run apps purchased from the MS app store, so you can't even install STO- or other software.
The Surface Pro will run a full version of Windows 8. It's supposed to be a tablet/netbook, so it might be able to run STO, but it may also be locked into the app store. Haven't heard anything yet. |
Surface Pro 128 GB
I play STO on my Surface Pro all the time. I use 1600x900 as my resolution with the graphics bar three quarters full. I usually get around 20 - 25 fps.

With the graphic setting you use, does that have dynamic lighting on or off? If on, how many lights per object? And is the lighting quality set to high or low? (These are the settings that probably most affect my visual enjoyment of STO.) |

some specifics: DYnamic lighting is OFF Lights per object 2 Shadows LOW The surface has an Intel card which doesn't do dynamic lighting and shadows very well. So, unfortunately, its not going to do the stuff you like well. However, I turned it on and running around earth space dock hasn't been so bad. My one problem is the game does not support touch very well. So clicking on things doesn't work well. The trackpad included on the keyboard cover works fantastic. As does plugging in a USB mouse. |
