Why not custom rewards - learning from TF2

As we wait for all for our missions to be republished, I was thinking about the rewards that were going to be attached to Featured Missions and how it's been said the devs won't devote time to making unique rewards for them. My thinking is what if they didn't have to, and we did it ourselves.

For those who may not know Team Fortress 2, which I think is both a perfect example of a game going from cost to free to play and how to structure a F2P game, a while ago introduced a system where members of the community could submit both maps and items with stats that are then tested by players and if found good are introduced into the game as official items. While STO doesn't have the modability of a first person shooter, I don't see why we can't have a similar system.

While we wouldn't be able to make models probably, there is still plenty of things we can work with on both the space and ground ends. All we would need would be some kind of standard as to what our reward weapons/Boffs/Doffs can have in terms of strength and go from there.

I believe they're working on that for Neverwinter. Don't think it will be available at release but "eventually"

I know with at least some of my missions I can come up with stats and costumes myself. Already have, although a few of them still need new geos and functions.

Aside from those, I can do thinks like create costumes for special BOffs with unique sets of traits (which may include player versions of some traits like telekinesis), as well as supply the roughly balanced stats for new items. Already writing up the stats for a few of said items that could be given as rewards for at least one of my missions (although I intended them to be Omega Force Reputation gear).

If Cryptic added a Steam Workshop like feature to STO, players could create and submit their own rewards to be given by their (or others') missions. It could be used for other things as well, such as adding the ever-promised additional weapon types like ushaan and d'k tahg. It would greatly increase player satisfaction with the game, adding to revenue at little to no effort on the part of the developers once the system is implemented. Pretty sweet deal, no?

I really would like it if we could give out customized Boffs as a mission reward. They could be chosen from a set of certain types, but allow us to customize the appearance. Even if we could only give out white boffs it would be kind of neat to be able to share.

I'm just excited with a custom reward option instead of none!

You should also be able to choose the traits, IMO.

Also, I would love to be able to create custom gear for item rewards as well, even if it means having to get them past a dedicated quality assurance specialist or something. This is so that inappropriate items are not included and unbalanced items would be balanced before inclusion.

I've always wanted my B'Vat's Legacy mission to be able to give people a Romulan for completing it... :)

I would even go so far as to say that I would even like it if we could "stock" our mission with rewards. Even if we have to pay for them with dilithium, or provide them with other characters. For example, I could just buy up a hundred Alien boffs and customize them in the editor, then attach them to my mission.

However, I'm not sure how practical that would be, since I'd have to somehow support the rewards myself, and I don't know that I could keep up with it.

What if there was an option to use the dilithium generated by each mission to "level up" the reward. Or it could be linked to a mission having a certain number of plays. Like after 20 plays you get a certain basic reward, then it's upgraded after 100, 1000 or whatever. The numbers obviously are open to adjustment.

In general having a reward based off of mission length would be the best, but even in that case it would be nice to be able to select between a few different options, like a Boff as opposed to a random deflector dish.
