Vesta or Odyssey?

I just about have enough points to get one of the ship bundles. I have a level 50 in all classes.

Give me some insight on the pluses and minuses of each, please.

I have both bundles and love them both. My Engi use the Ody for tanking and it's a joy to use. Turns like crap, and has all the other negatives other Cruisers have, but it's definitely fun to captain. There are a lot of posts already on which version is best, but ultimately it depends on how you intend to use it, however, don't expect it to ever be a dps machine. Tank, healer/support - definitely one of the best cruisers to use until you get to T5 Fleet ships, imho.

I was never a Science fan, that is until the Vesta. I actually prefer it at times over my Ody and 'scort. The Aux Canons with rear turrets and CRF combined with sci skills and the vesta's consoles make this a great hybrid ship. Again, it won't ever top the charts in dps, but that's not what it's meant to do. Traffic control, support, with a decent amount of dps to boot makes this worth having. But I will admit some of my fellow fleet mates have not been as thrilled as me. They were expecting more of a scort-like ship. I don't have the Wells but the Vesta is definitely my favorite sci ship.

In the end it really boils down to what kind of a captain you are at heart. Very different ships with very different purposes. But if you're indifferent to sci/sci v eng/cruiser, you can't go wrong with either pick. GL and enjoy! :D

The most important question is:

What do you feel your play-style is like?

fr8monkey 12-17-2012 06:52 PM

I have been playing TAC 98% of the time. Use the Tactical Escort Retrofit with quad phaser cannon, Dual heavy cannon and dual phasers. Lots of fun! (can you say BOOM?)

My ENG has the original Odyssey with Phaser relays (for broadsides at distance) and heavy healing ability.

SCI has the Cation carrier; but I am still getting the hang of using it.
Just wanting to get some ideas...

The Vesta deals a lot more damage than any other Sci ship available (due to being able to equip DHCs), while the Odyssey isn't significantly better than another cruiser.

Odyssey is a heck of a tank and support ship, but the Vesta's extra speed and cannon-mounts makes it a lot more versatile.

QFT^

to be fair, imo the odyssey is the best cruiser, because it is a bit more versitile than the others. however the vesta (pack) has much more to offer, and more versitality

First, I preface this post with the saying - fly whatever fits your playstyle. Who cares how fancy the ship is, if you don't fly it in the way that maximizes it's (and your) potential...

On that note - as mentioned before, the biggest thing the Odyssey has going for it over any other cruiser in the game is the 3 piece console set, a universal BOff or two, and maybe (not 100% certain) having 10 console slots. If you're an ace cruiser pilot, then by all means get this ship.

The Vesta, on the other hand, has quite a few features that put it above any other Science ship in the game - it's own 3 piece set like the Oddy, 10 console slots, only science ship that can mount DCs/DHCs, hangar bay, 2 universal BOff slots (LtCmdr 3 slot & Ens. 1 slot).

As a Sci captain, I got the Vesta and don't regret the purchase at all. Yeah, she's not an escort, but I didn't want an escort. Science ship turn rate is almost, but not quite as good as an escort, hull is even more papery than a 'scorts, and she's almost as slow on low engine power as a cruiser. Meanwhile, the shields are some of the best in the game. Aux cannons let me maintain a high Aux to benefit my Sci powers, it puts out some of the best DPS I've ever tossed from a Science ship, especially with the deflector-based "phaser lance" console, and slotting danubes in the hangar gives me decent enough pet DPS and a tractor beam to enhance my DPS. I slotted the Universal BOffs in a very Luna style (Science in the LtCmdr slot & Tactical in the Ensign slot, which with the Cmdr Sci, Lt Engie, Lt Tac is a 100% match to the Luna) which is one of my favorite power sets, but you can slot it in a method that maximizes your playstyle...

heres a small sampling of what can be done with the vesta

http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/sh...d.php?t=488821 note that is a pvp minded build for each one but they all work well in pve as well.

I've got both, and the Vesta is a lot more fun to fly. Its consoles are better. It can carry better weapons. It doesn't handle like a pig. Cons: very weak hull compared to cruisers, no special bridge.

The pros of the Odyssey are that it can be made very hard to destroy, and it has a very nice bridge (which cannot, unfortunately, be used on other ships).
