Fleets ? Why Should I Bother ?

I have been playing for a couple of weeks now and I have managed to get to LVL50.

Although I am Free2Play I decided that there was not much on offer in the monthly subscription that would be of any use to me but I have sown my support so far in buying a nice Tactical Cruiser !

Anyway, to my point....

In my first few days I was invited to join a "Fleet" ?

I had no idea what it meant at the time and so just accepted the request to join and left it at that....

Now though I am wondering what it's all about ?

I have been looking at the fleet page for the last few days but all I can see is that I am expected to pour all my hard earned fleet marks, dilitium etc... Give away my bridge officers ? And my duty officers ?

So....

Since it takes me many hours to actually build in form of stock of any of these things it begs the question.....

What exactly is in it for me ? Is there something I can gain from this ?

I am currently pouring quite a bit into the "Rep" system but I still like the idea of helping my Fleet out, but I first need to decide if it's worth my while ?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

First, you shouldn't have just joined a random fleet. There are a lot of good ones, and a lot of bad ones. To be honest, anyone who just spams invites is probably a bad one.

Secondly, there are a lot of reasons to join. You get access to fleet ships, fleet gear, and some other stuff that you'd miss out on if you aren't in a fleet. It's also a great way to make friends, and its nice to be able to run STFs without having to PUG it.

As for the contributions, once you play for a month or so, you'll find that you'll start having extra commodities, doffs, boffs, etc. Donating to a fleet project gets you fleet marks, which in turn are used for the fleet gear I mentioned.

Finally, if you aren't happy with the fleet you're in, leave. You can always quit, and find another fleet. The one I'm in now is the third fleet I've been in, and TBH, it's the best. It certainly has the friendliest people, and it's advanced the most out of any. Msg me in-game at nelson@tcostik if you have any more questions.

You earn fleet credits from your contributions. You can in turn use those in combination with other items, usually dilithium, to unlock some of the most powerful end game weapons and ships.

I agree, you should not have accepted a blind invite. BUT, it happened. So ...

And that's just to start. STOWiki has a little editorializing from the authors, but for the most part is spot on the facts.

Ultimately, Fleets are only worth it if you determine they have value for your game play. If you want the uber-best gear then you'll need a Fleet. The flip side is that Fleets need contributions from the members that does not come naturally from your prefered style of play.

Thanks for the replies.

As said when I first started I didn't have a clue what was happening which is why I accepted.

The fleet is BrotherHood Of Space Cadets is that means anything to anyone ?

Think I might start adding things to my fleet and see what happens as it looks like there are some goodies to be ahd that will be beneficial.

Do you have to complete these goals to get anything ? So if I was the only one giving up my goodies and nobody else bothered I would get nothing ?

What you need to do is talk to the people running the fleet or other fleet members. If they can't give you the answers that you like/need, then your best option is to leave.

One warning sign to look out for is a fleet that doesn't let you contribute to fleet projects or won't let you spend fleet credits when you do.

If you contribute to fleet projects and can't spend the fleet credits you earn in a fleet store, you should send a message to a fleet leader to ask about it. Enabling that permission for you might just be an oversight.

One way or the other, you will learn something about that fleet and how they treat fleet members.

Being the member of a fleet gives you access to a fleet starbase and a fleet embassy, in addition to the fleet bank and a fleet uniform. It also gives you a built-in list of friends when you want to do team content.

What benefits you get from the starbase or the embassy depends on what projects have been completed and how advanced the fleet holding is. It might be the ability to buy a high-level Fleet ship, or special Fleet equipment, or extra Transwarp destinations, or in the case of embassies, even extra Assignment slots for DOFFing.

As someone who has been burnt out on various fleets... I made the one I'm currently in tell me reasons why I should bother joining them. Basically act like a free agent in any major sport and have the teams 'sell' you why you should be affiliated with them while at the same time making sure to tell them how you play.

Yes and no. When you contribute things to the projects, you earn "Fleet Credits". Most of the things that you can buy from the fleet store will require a certain number of these credits, so earning some is a good thing.

However, you will notice that when a project is completely filled, it goes onto a countdown timer. When the timer completes, your fleet earns XP, and the next project is started. You fleet 'levels' just like you do. There are 5 tiers for the starbase, and 3 tiers for the embassy. As more projects are completed, your starbase or embassy goes up in tiers. As it goes up in tiers, different things become available for purchase from the store. For example, if you starbase reaches tier 3 in the military branch, you can purchase a Fleet tactical escort retrofit ship. If it reaches tier 3 in engineering, you can buy Elite Fleet ground weapons.

So, to answer your question, you personally gain fleet credits when you donate. But unless the projects get completed, the starbase wont advance. If you are the only one donating, but you are able to fill the projects, then the starbase is advancing. If you are the only one donating, but the projects aren't getting filled, then the starbase is in effect stalled.

Think I will send some messages to the leaders and see what their rplies are.

I take it I can do this from the Fleet base screen ?
