Ship Ideas for a KDF Sci Captain Please!

I want to make a KDF Science captain, so I'll have a captain of each type with each faction. Trouble is, I can't decide what ship I eventually want to fly at 50! Every character I've made I've known what I want to aim for before I made the toon, but I'm drawing almost a blank here.

I'll be flying mostly PvE on this character...to start anyway, I'm not ruling out PvP as an eventuality. So with that in mind, DPS is going to be needed...a straight up support role is probably not what I'm looking for.

I would prefer a ship I don't have to use zen to get...but if there's one that you think is really cool, tell me about it.

So, to the point then, lets here your thoughts!

Your options at 50 for a Klingon Sci Captain are a bit limited. It essentially breaks down to this:

Bird of Prey type vessel. There are several variants out there of BoPs that might interest you at level 50. These tactical vessels have all universal slots, and so can be configured as a sci ship. I don't think you get Sensor Analysis or subsystem targeting...but you can maximize sci abilities in these fairly easily. I have seen sci captains in a BoP wreak incredible havoc...but it takes practice, and some of the finer points of piloting these vessels can be complicated if you want to survive in one.

The Varanus. There is a Tier 5 version, as well as a Fleet version of this vessel. To be honest though...the fleet version is sort of..."meh." I expected more than what was done with these. This is the only "True" sci vessel at level 50 that the Klingons have at this point...but in May, I am expecting to see a couple more come into play.

The Korath Sci Lockbox Ship (Temporal Sci Vessel). This is arguably the best "sci" ship for the Klingons. It is unfortunate that it is a lockbox ship. Very high manueverability (similar to a Tac vessel), excellent shields, sensor analysis, and some interesting consoles. My Sci captain flies one of these.

The Vo'Quv carrier. This is sort of considered a sci vessel on the Klingon side. Carrier ops are very different from other vessel operations -- it isn't for everybody...and Vo'Quvs often fit best as a combat support role, although they are viable in solo PvP as well. Personally, I don't like the turn rate on these.

That is what you basically have available if you want to emphasize Sci abilities at level 50 on the Klingon side. However...I am hopeful for May. There is an incredible imbalance in sci ships between the Feds and the Klingons...so I sort of half expect that one or two of the new ships coming our way will be sci variants. We will see.

It really depends on what you want to do as a sci captain. Mine has flown a handful of Bop's, Raptors, and the Kar'fi. Eventually i settled her on the Kar'fi, but there is alot of fun to be had in raptors or BOPs.

BOPS: tend to build some what around a theme. You wont get any boosts to the ship for sciency stuff like you would with a real science ship, but you can build for control in a bop due to the universals and still have some tactical abilities to tinker with to boost damage.

Raptor: Not a science ship at all, your building for raw damage, however your scan and snb can come in handy, though to be fair this shines more in pvp than it does in pve where snb has few uses. Still, there is fun to be had in it.

Kar'fi: *shiver* love this carrier, has enough science to help control the board, enough turn to USE it and enough tactical to lay down some hurt if needed. The pets also are not shabby! For me this is all win to my sci klink =)

The gorn sci ship..I had it. Was NOT a fan. its way too clunky for a sci ship, imo. But it does make a good healing platform, if thats what you want to do go for it =)

I have 2 toon sci in klingon side:

- first run a Karfi (orion female): have a good dps, very fun with the comm sci, ens sci, with the help to attack in 2 boff tact and dont forget the eng station (for autohealing)

- varanus (gorn male): its a funny full debufer have a good look this ship BUT read slowly: if you are in a fleet with fleet yard tier III, i recommend buy the varnus fleet version

For a varient to the standard vo'quv, try the mirror version - its set up for engineering, but in my opinion carries more than enough science still to be good for a sci role, but with enough hull tankiness (via boff skills) to toss the carriers own damage into the fray when you use the sensor scan instead of hanging back (even better, the ship has space for aux to dampner to give the carrier some turn capability outside of evasive doff use)

Also, as the carrier uses aux to determine hangar recharge rates, you naturally will have a high aux to help with science skills, which also determines heal strength for hazard emitters and aux2sif..

Try it - you can get a mirror for less than a million ec, so its worths a try if the Karfi is out of reach or you just can't live with the reject-from-Darius :p

This is silly easy to answer:

VoQuv carrier.

It can be kitted as a monster tank, dps, support and play as a carrier if you wish. It can do everything. Except turn.

Sci captains are best suited for this ship if you're into support and tanking. Engineers are best suited for this ship if you intend to tank and dps. Tacticals should stay away from this ship unless they enjoy replaying Battlestar Pegasus' final moments every day in STO.

Birds of Prey, particularly the B'rel Retro and Fleet Norgh can be 100% pure science ships if you're into healing-others & crowd control mindset. The Brel retro in particular can heal and toss crowd control abilities without breaking cloak, making it the 'medical ninja' of the group.

The B'rel Retro is what I would choose just for it's uniqueness. You get the enhanced battle cloak, which lets you toss heals and cc without being visible, PLUS the fact that it's a torp boat makes for some really interesting build ideas and sudden spike damage.

If you're more carrier oriented, I'd say go for the Vo'Quv. That ship is a monster (I use it on my Engineer). If you do get it, I recommend getting the Bird of Prey pets for the hangars. You'll be mind blown at the damage they can do.

Is there a list of boff abilities that can be used while cloaked in the B'Rel?

rovakiin 02-07-2013 01:31 PM

I'm not sure of ALL the abilities that can be used while cloaked, but stuff I've seen in game includes Hazard Emitters, Tractor Beam, Tractor Beam Repulsors, as well as science team and extend shields. Once I get the zen for it I'm going to do some experimenting to see just what does and doesn't bring the B'rel out of cloak.
