Excelsior CANNON build help?
 
So I'm considering trying cannons on my Excelsior because it's got a decent turn rate. So how do I best put together a cannon build for a cruiser? Should I use SINGLE cannons, so I can still broadside, or should I use dual heavies front and turrets rear?

You can only use single cannons and turrets on the Excelsior.

They are good if you just want to face the target and deal good damage without the need to broadside. This may be good if you got a torpedo heavy build.

FACE PALM...sorry for the lapse, I knew duals and dual heavies were only for Vestas and Escorts lol. Anyway, ok so if I try this it's single cannons. Thanks for the correction :D

I did hear its a workable build. Though if you plan for going the romulan prototype Romulan beam array, i would go beams.

But if you go another energy type, the cannons are a very valid thing, you just need at least one tactical team.

I run a fleet Excelsior with 4 singles front and 4 turrets rear. It can be quite effective using Aux to Batt and anything to combat power drop off

Cannons excelsior is a great ship! Very possibly the best cruiser the Federation has.

EPTW1 should take care of any power problems you might have running all cannons and turrets.. Cannons sip power compared to beams.

I'd strongly urge you in the direction of Energy Weapon Officers for this ship. One type (the most expensive type, naturally) can reduce the cooldown times on cannon attacks. You can carry CRF2 and APB1, and use your rapid fire basically as often as if you had 2 copies of it.

I use cannons in my oddy and in my jhdc and it works fine.. I put a torp launcher up front to but i guess thats optional kind of but if not u should use the cutting beam.

Not trying to necro a thread, but since PWE in all its wisdom doesnt allow me to create new topics, I felt this one was the most appropriate to ask my question.

Im currently running 4 Single Cannons / 4 Turrets

TT, APB, CRF2
EptS1, Aux2Bat1, RSP, DEM3
EptW1, Aux2Bat
ET1

HE, TSS

However I had 2 questions.

1> How much better/worse would the same build be but replacing 1 front cannon with a Torp. And replacing 1 aft turret with Kinetic Cutting Beam. Basically im finding in STF's I melt shield but lack in taking down hulls. Obviously changing APB to HYT

2>Is Aux2Bat builds really that great on cannon builds? Is there something else that works better?

personally i think thats where the limits of the excelsior are...and the benefits of the fleet AC or the tac oddy start. both work better with torps since they can accomodate torp powers without giving up anything in the tac department.
projectiles are pretty much worthless if you have no torp powers imho.

once you have 6 or more engi boff slots, aux 2batt build is probably the best you can have in regards to damage.

personally i can only advice you to try it out with a KCB for a few days...if you think it is enough kinetic dmg than thats cool...
personally i would change into an fleet AC and get spread 1 with a quantum launcher, preferably the 180 degree launcher.

The only real thing to choose is what type of weapon will you be using? with your build, i'd focus on tetryon, plasma, or polaron.

tetryon for obvious degradation to shields, plasma for the burn proc and fleet sci modules, and polaron to reduce power levels in the enemy.

with CRF or CSV, polaron cannons do well at reducing enemy power levels, leaving them more susceptable to damage due to slower speed, lower shield strength, or less weapon damage, giving u more time to chew them down. With all weapons firing, u will need to focus all power into weapons, and make up for less shields with consoles boosting shield cap and minimizing damage thru neutronium.

I'd also consider getting a KCB in lieu of a 4th turret. DPS will outmatch the turret.
