Buying Retrofit of Different Class

When I leveled I decided to give a Cruiser a shot after playing Escort for many levels. I find I really, really dislike the play-style. Unfortunately I don't have the Dilithium to buy a different class. If I buy the retrofit for an Escort will that "unlock" the class for my character or would I still need to a ship from the in-game vendor?

If you buy a ship from the C-store, you can claim it on any (or all) of your characters, as long as they're leveled enough.

That doesn't quite answer the question.

Refits and retrofits are completely separate ship classes - you don't need the base ship to claim or buy either.

and, once you buy it for zen, you can claim it for free on all your characters of that faction, or a Romulan if you ally with that faction.

Fleet ships on the other hand, are cheaper if you own the retrofit version of that ship, but they don't require it.

To answer your question you can buy anyship you want you don't need the base ship at all.

And just to be tediously clear, any player in any career path can fly any class of ship at any time as long as you meet the rank requirement for that ship.

You could theoretically keep an escort, cruiser, and science vessel around to fly. The downside is that you may need to get new equipment, respec your skills, and retrain your bridge officers to optimize your performance in a different ship.

Which basically means you either skill up to fly all kinds of ships at average performance for all of them, or you fly one ship or one class of ship and specialize in it.

Before you trash your cruiser, though, you should be aware that there is a change coming to the RCS Accelerator consoles that will improve turn rate for slow ships like the Galaxy and other cruisers. Between that, and the correct skills, and the right engine power level, and engines with a good turn modifier on them they might end up turning somewhat better if you optimize for it. Also, some cruisers turn better than others. You won't out-turn an escort, but it might be tolerable.

Regarding purchase of ships:

As started in an earlier reply, C-Store ships can be used by any of your characters (as long as their rank is equal or higher for that tier of ship), they can also be dismissed and reclaimed again later...

Ships that can be purchased with Dilithium in game, can only be used on THAT character. If it is dismissed, you have to buy it again. Same goes for Lockbox ships.

I hope all of this is clear now.

Which cruiser did you buy exactly? The Excelsior and Sovvie have good turn rates. Built with single cannons and you have yourself a fairly potent ship if built properly. As a tac captain I have taken a step back from escorts simply because I find Cruisers more versatile and challenging. The Fleet Excelsior especially is a force to be reckon with if built right.

If you mean the 'basic' tier 5 ships then I suggest you buy the mirror universe version off the exchange, they can be very cheap depending on which one. Like 20k EC. Beats spending 200k Dil.

Any ship you buy from the C-store is account wide unlock. And you can discard and re-aquire as desired on same toon too.
