Idea to give Sci ships a little more power.

Well I've always been a supporter of reverting Sci abilities to Exotic damage but if that wont happen I've been thinking about something else.

It seems in a lot of cases no one cares about Sci ships, I've seen over and over about giving Cruisers a new type of weapon or giving them more of a advantage with the ones they have. Now Cruisers can do some nice damage if built and flown right but most Sci ships suffer except maybe the Vesta line. (And that has a lot more going for it than any other Sci ship in the game.)

A lot of the various energy weapons are called *particle* weapons. Phasers, Polaron, Tetyron, and Antiproton weapons were all particle based weapons.

Basically what I'm getting to is maybe Sci ships can get a new little innate buff that allows energy weapons to gain some damage from particle generators.

Doesn't have to be a huge buff but something would be nice!

The list of weapons there is quite large.

I would suggest restricting the ability to only Science Vessels and possibly only Full-Sized Carriers (2 Hangars), as other (Escort, Flight-Deck)Carriers are simply full Escorts/Cruisers with a working hangar strapped on.

Could provide Science Vessels with extra punch.

Hrm, use particle generator skill to buff weapon damage... could work

I was thinking only ships that are truly Sci ships...exclusive to ships that have Sensor Analysis, carriers can achieve nice dps with their fighters.

Or maybe ships that have a Sci Commander? Because lets face it does the Dom Dread really need more damage with a 4/3 layout and 4 tac consoles? Not really.

True enough, I started thinking about the pet damage that KDF Carriers and the JHDC can put out, and it's a good idea to restrict it to just Science Vessels, possibly even leave off the Vesta from that list as well since it can already slot DHCs and get Escort-levels of damage without needing anything else, and the Recluse is getting Frigate-level pets soon too.

So, yeah...Particle Generators apply small energy weapon damage boost to (Non-Vesta) Science Vessels.

Sounds good to me.

could also have it be a straight kinetic buff, that would clarify some of the exotic confusion too

I think science ships should do science better than any other ship in the game. So my suggestion would be:

1- A new power that when you click it, it will make the Periodic Table of Elements appear in your HUD. Just in case you need some atomic weights at your finger tips.

2- Seonsor Scan gets the added buff of being able to do quadratic equations randomly for you, just in case you need to help your kids with math homework while you're playing.

3- Science ships when they refine dilithium also get to choose a random birthstone to give to one of their BOFF crew everytime they click the refine button. That way you keep your geology skills honed.

4- All science ships come with a special Gregor Mendel holographic DOFF. This DOFF has the special DOFF mission of genetically tagging peas he grows in your hydroponics bay.

That's all I got off the top of my head, but hey, feel free to add MOAR SCIENCE ideas to Science ships!

The best way to structure the restriction so as to achieve the "only SCIENCE ships need apply" limitation, while also recognizing that there are more "Science" ships than just the ships offered by the Starfleet (ie. don't forget the KDF and Romulan Star Forces) would be to "enable" modification of Beam Weapons (not Cannons) so as to allow Starship Particle Generators to apply an effect to Beam Weapons (of which there is more than one type) ... *IF* ... the Bridge Officer occupying the highest ranking Boff Station is a Science Boff.

Note that keying this advantage to a "if highest ranking Boff Station is occupied by Science Boff only" standard, you allow ships (like KDF Raiders) which are full of Universal Stations to also make use of this added feature *IF* they staff themselves in the same way a "Science" ship would. Further note that in the case of Starfleet ships, such a construction of the "eligibility constraint" essentially limits the effect to Science ships only as of Tier 1+, simply due to Boff layouts. From a conceptual standpoint, it simplifies a lot of decisions about which ships should "get" this advantage, including ships that are loaded with Universal stations (hello Raiders!).

I didn't think all of the details through, just after watching DS9/VOY/ENT all on netflix since I haven't seen them since their finale's...I heard a lot of talk about particle weapons (especially on ENT) and I got to thinking maybe its something that could help Science ships.

I love Sci ships and in a lot of ways they are the worst off in the game but seems like everyone wants to buff Cruisers recently even though they are a little better off. So I thought I would throw this idea out that came to me.

Or well, has been a bit of talk about adding special beams that only cruisers can use, maybe should add aux beam weapons that get some damage from particle generators. (Obviously not to much because don't need to get OP)

I like the idea. We all know that Sci.ships could use a bit of a buff, especially in the DPS department unless Cryptic miracoulosly changes the end game in STO from DPS centric to more adopted like the CE event was for example.

This should be restricted to Science ships only. This would also include the Vesta, because it's a Sci. ship and regardless if it may be considered the most powerfull sci. ship in game, it's still a sci.ship and the people who own one deserve to have all the innate buffs that all science vessels have. However, I would exclude the carriers or raiders from this - although they can be utilized for science, they are not pure science ships and need no buff of this kind. I think it's not that complicated to add the ability just to ships designated as 'science ships' rather than apply it to any ship that has the highest Boff slot reserved for science.
