Surely it took more time to evacuate everyone to the saucer section than it would have taken for everyone to go to the escape pods and get to a safe distance....?

Anyone care to explain?

Simple reason is they wanted an epic crash scene. but if you want the technical reason then i dont think that escape pods have impulse engines. only thrusters. (perhaps some techy knows for sure?)

so the saucer is moving away at full impulse and still gets hit by the blast. escape pods will be moving at thrusters only, (maybe a lower impulse at max) and even with the increased time still would have been closer to the ship than the saucer was so they would have been incinerated by the explosion.

if it has been a random explosion, it probably would have been fine, but this was a warp core explosion and the power/range would have been too much for the pods to escape.

surely though that any normal explosion would result in the same power?
warp core still gets obliterated...

romeowhiskey4 06-29-2013 09:45 AM be a pain.... If you design an escape pod surely you would make it so that is had enough power to get away fast... :p

Yeah, it was just for the epic crash. I don't think they cared a bit about explaining it logically. They just wanted it to happen, so they made it happen.

Best explanation? The crew left in charge of the Enterprise made a rash decision and didn't really think it through.

Generations is actually the only Trek movie I deeply disliked, so I don't spend much time trying to figure out its plot developments.

Well I always experienced it as if Riker expected the saucer to not crash...

I don't believe his character would have taken the chance on loosing people (they were lucky), and not used the saucer as evacuation method if he had not believed it to be the best possible solution.

If he had known, or even suspected the saucer would crash, he'd probably had ordered the use of the escape pods.

Of all the cringe-worthy moments in that movie this is what trips you up?

Not Data curling up into a ball and crying when Billy Idol starts shooting up the space station?

Not the "Tuesday" gag?

Not Picard's Victorian Christmas or Kirk's omelet?

Not the fact that all Geordi had to do to save the Enterprise was rotate the shield frequencies?

This movie is what Killed off the franchies.

Riker was drunk during the end of the Enterprise. It's the only explaination for why he was such a bad commander in the moment. I mean seriously, why did he just not have worf open fire with everything the enterprise had? If you don't think to refrequency teh shields when they get penetrated (I can forgive this being overlooked cos they don't know how they did it, and if geordi did refrequency the shields, the duras would still be able to see and alter accordingly), then why not just open up with everything? I blame Worf for this just as much as Riker. One beam? Seriously? One beam against an ancient scrap pile that the people flying state is a scrap pile with no chance of going toe to toe? Sure, they probably would have got more shots in, but this is the Enterprise. Galaxy Class. It has serious firepower and should have used it.

Ramble got away from me.

Point is, Riker's entire commanding in those moments is questionable. But he didn't expect the saucer to crash is the real answer. He figured they would have time to get away, and the saucer has a much better chance of structurally surviving a core breach. Escape pods only have thrusters (way too small for impulse engines of any kind). Even if they had explosive jettison, they probably wouldn't have got away.

And maybe it was like the Titanic. Not enough life pods to go around?

The bulk of the people were already in the saucer so running through corridors and mass transports were still pretty quick?

The saucer is capable of supporting the crew indefinitely until help arrived?

Riker just wanted to be a jerk and order his ex to oversee an evac?

Honestly it was just for the money shot of the saucer crashing and the Ent-D was not long for this universe once TNG moved to the big screen.
