Need/Greed/Pass Rolls
'Pass' is obvious, but what are 'Need' and 'Greed', and why does 'Need' sound like it can be easily abused?

Need overpowers greed rolls.

In normal mmo etiquette, you only need if it's a direct upgrade to a piece of gear you own. You greed if you intend on using it on an alt or to sell them item.

In this game everyone "needs" to sell, and although I don't agree with it, I do it so I can get loot to sell. Most gear is vendor trash but that makes up most of your ec balance

So why isn't there some kind of 'Diminishing Returns' effect in play? As in, each successive 'Need' roll is capped at a certain score.

Would need to be programmed in which costs money and would have not return profit

That doesn't follow. There's a lot of things that are patched in with each shard update that wouldn't return a profit.

im not a dev, only assuming the reason why it wouldnt go in

More likely reason is that Cryptic has never valued random loot, and they've never particularly cared if players value it - indeed they clearly want us to not value it. Even under the chaos of the pre-S5 badge/merit/mark/emblem system the intent was there, but every season has done a little bit to devaluate it further.

Unlike most other MMO's where look drops at the very end after all of the fighting is over, and everyone can take the time to look over what has dropped and if they need it or not, ST:O loots on the fly.

This means you can be in the middle of fighting 3 other ships when a loot box pops up and you don't have the luxury to stop and try to determine the usability of the item drop.

This means everyone Needs on an item, unless they absolutely do not want it, then they chose Pass.

Cryptic really should overhaul the Need/Greed/Pass to Yes/No (Want/Don't Want) options instead.

It would save a lot of headaches for users and it would simplify the system so that it is more in line with ST:O game-play instead of generic options based on other MMO's.
