New Beam Weapon Type?

We all know that cannons are probably the most popular weapon type in the game. All the leading escorts use them and now with the introduction of the Avenger cruisers will also be using them. Let's look at the different cannon types to start with, single canon, dual cannons, dual heavy cannons and then turrets (if you count that last one). Then for beams we have beam arrays and then dual beams. There's an obvious lack of choice when it comes to beams at the moment when compared to cannons so I have a proposal.

I present to you, the heavy beam array!

There are different ways we could go about this, for increased damage you could either reduce it's firing arc from 250 degrees to say 210? Or you could think back to Starfleet Command and make it similar to the standard and F type phasers, one fires quicker with less damage per shot or a slower firing rate for higher damage.

I know it's only a basic suggestion at the moment, but I think it would be nice for fans of beams to have an alternate type to use depending on their play style. I know Galaxy fans would like to see a beam array with the charge up effect like we saw in TNG instead of the little pew pew beams we have presently. Interested to know what you folks think.

There is probably a good chance the new rep will have heavy beam turret arrays, anyone who has access to tribble would of experienced this weapon because of the voth using them, may only be antiproton but, would expect something like this for us in the voth task force rep ( annoyingly does mean new grind!!! ).

Heavy beam arrays and beam turrets, plain and simple. Should have been in the game when it launched since it absolutely makes no sense at all it's not in the game...

Oh please for the love of Trek THIS!!! Do this Cryptic and it will be the most pleasurable rep.grind for me. I would hapily grind for heavy beam arrays and beam turrets. Just please, please make a phaser variation of them, I hate AP with a passion.

I realy hope this is brought on with the next rep., that Avenger with those tubes and the new cruiser comm arays just weep for setting up a beam boat.

Shpoks unlike the other thread, this is something i totally agree with you on, i don't think we are alone on this either.

I definitely agree that we should have had beam turrets from the get go. I have some other ideas to present, though - wide and split beam arrays, based on ground weapons (but for ships).

Wide beam arrays would put out a cone shaped blast, dealing damage to all enemies in, say, a 15-20 degree arc from the target. Their range would be limited to maybe 5k instead of the normal 10 however.

Split beam arrays would work sort of like a mini fire at will. The beam will always hit your target, but it will also have a split, secondary beam that will hit a random enemy near your target.

Similarly, I would like to see compression cannons or something similar, which fire powerful (but slow) single blasts - like a compression pistol or sniper rifle.

Those are called Heavy Cannons.

There is only 1 Single Heavy Cannon, and a wide variety of Dual Heavy Cannons.

Heavy Beams should be in the game, they should work exactly like (Dual) Heavy Cannons.

Instead of firing a sequence it does the exact same DPS but in a single Volley. And have a built in [CrtD] enhancement

This, I really like this idea, I would even be fine with them making it a front-load only weapon like dual heavy cannons.

It's about variety, not mechanics.

Besides, I was thinking of something more along the lines of a mass driver or ye olde pirate ship cannon - fires a single shot, with a moderate refire rate (2-3 seconds, perhaps), and high burst damage, but lower overall DPS.

I suggested beam turrets a while back in the general discussion forum. Most of the detractors shouted it down under the notion of "it's not optimal DPS, so GTFO."

Geko has also said he feels "beams are fine" which only leads me to genuinely believe that he hates beam weapons, since beams are s@%# and the only purpose of DBBs is to fit a single one as a Beam Overload delivery system. As such, I doubt we'll ever see any new beam types. The entire Dev team seems to be made up of Ace Combat junkies.

Not that Ace Combat is bad, mind you, just that this is Star Trek, not Ace Combat.
