Disruptors vs. Phaser?
 
other than color, is there an in-game difference in functionality between the two? I'm not interested in Star Trek speak/canon but only how it applies in-game.

In space, phasers have a chance of knocking a system out, while disruptors have a chance of knocking out resistence. I can't remember the ground ones right now.

Also, some shields are more resistant to disruptors, and I assume others are more resistant to phasers.

Also, Disruptors are preferred by NPCs of the Klingon faction, while federation NPCs tend to use phasers. Something to keep in mind when equipping consoles :)

Isn't there a firing arc difference as well? I can't remember....

firing arcs are the same for the same type of disruptor / phaser weapon... banks, dual banks, cannons, etc...

If you want to maximise your DPS, Disruptors would be a surer bet. Phasers might knock out shields, but only for a couple seconds, while they also might knock out something less useful, like engines or aux, but only for a couple seconds.

Personally, I'd go with Phasers, but mostly thematically.

Another difference is the rank at which you can increase beams and disruptor weapon power with skills. You can buff beams at Lt. Cmdr. rank but you have to wait until Cmdr. to put points into disruptors.

I've had enemy shields go completely down a number of times during combat.. It only lasts a few seconds but it sure is nice when torpedos are on their way.

I've also had them stop dead in space, which for BoP types is nice since they cant turn their cannons on me.

phaser and disruptor are both same rank skills so until you get to that rank and raise one or the other nothings going to be different apart from the proc. Both of which are useful so its entirely up to your preference.
