Relationship between Captain and BO Skills

Okay. I'm confused about the interrelationship between your toon's skills and the BO skills. Let's say I have an engineer. Do I want my BO engineers to have skills different than mine to increase the total skills available or do the toon's skill and the BO's skill stack?

I notice that when both my toon and my engineering BO have torp high yield it doesn't matter which one I press the other one goes into simultaneous cooldown, so there is no benefit in terms of echoing the skill.

Any help please?

Well, the space abilities you get are different than the ones your BOs get. The only way to get 2 High Yield torpedos is to have 2 tactical officers with it both in tactical stations, or a lieutenant tactical officer with it trained for both his ensign and lieutenant skills in a lieutenant tactical station (High Yield Torps is only used by tactical officers). Many abilities, such as High Yield Torpedos do share cooldowns, although the shared cooldown is less than the cooldown for each ability (i.e. you use your first Torp cd, it triggers a cd on both, 15s later the one you didn't use can be used, and then you alternate every 15s). Other abilities, such as Emergency Power abilities, share the full cd with each other and thus there isn't much use to having two of the same ones.

On the ground, your kits can contain the same abilites your BO's have, but they won't share cooldowns. It's up to you if you want to share abilities with your crew or not.

Just a question, what do you mean both your toon and the BO have high yield torp skill?

But in relation to that, yeah, i'd imagine if you're running a cruiser and had two engi BOs both with High Yield 1, they'd be a waste of a slot, as you'd only benefit from one of those High Yields.

Sorry I messed up. That could only happen if the toon was tac; I got confused by my BO TAC having the HYT skill in his box but it also shows up in my ability power bar as a number preset. Does it Matter if i click on the BO skill versus the power preset bar??????

Thanks

Nope.

Personally I use my preset bar for my own skills and any BO skills that are a bit further away from the weapons (for convenience, yknow). Everything else gets removed (right click and drag). Th only other effect of having them on the preset bar is that on the lower rung of the bar the skill is assigned a number you can press for it...

Tactical captains do not get hyt as one of their captain skills, but any of the BO skills can be dragged onto the hotbar for ease of use.

BO skills and captain skills:

BO skills are taught to your bridge officers either from the npc trainer, random unassigned bridge officers or through you unlocking them to train with rank 9 captain skills.

Engineer BO's can only learn engineer BOffs and tactical only tactical boffs etc. So you cannot have an engineer bridge officer with high yield torpedo NO MATTER WHAT.

What specifies the sort of BO skills you can end up with (aka what rank 3 BO abilities you'll be able to use) is your ship.

Cruisers will be able to use rank 3 engineering BOffs
Escorts will be able to use rank 3 tactical BOffs
Science will be able to use rank 3 science BOffs.

Your captain class will not change this ever.

Your captain skills are unique, no bridge officer can ever learn any of the captain skills. You get generic captain skills on all captain classes (evasive maneuvers, ramming speed, brace for impact etc) but you also get some class unique abilities on every level ending with 8 (so every 10 levels after level 8) these can be used on any ship and can be used to fill gaps in the ships bridge officer assigned abilities.

So engineer in a science will get 7 science abilities from bridge officers (including upto 3 rank 3) but only upto 3 engineering abilities from bridge officers. But being an engineering captain they also gets 5 unique engineering skills to use on top of that, allowing them to have 7 science and 8 engineering in total.

I plan to not take any skills that my BOs have. My thinking is that the BO skill has the same effect as if my Capt had it. This way, I can spend the skill points enhancing other skills. Combined, my crew will have maximum effectiveness with several maxed skills.

Is this flawed somehow?

I just don't see much benefit from skill redundancy between the Capt and BOs.

Your captain cannot get any skills bridge officers can get they are unique to the captains.

They may have similar effects but not the exact same effect.

I think the confusion comes from the fact that "your" skill tree improves skills such as High Yield Torpedos etc, when in fact you're improving the skill of your Bridge Officers. There's a lot of cross-over between you, your ship, and your crew. It's one giant organism. :p

Yeah, this.

Your captain skills tend to affect how effectively your BOs use their skills. You have a few things off to the side for yourself, but you are also a leader of men (and women, and ... Things), and many of your skills reflect that by affecting your BOs.
