Engineer vs Tactical
 
I notice a large number of people at higher lvl in beta playing engineer. What advantages do Engies get over Tactical builds? I would have thought most people would play tactical over Engie.

Engineers are pretty solid in every way. In Space their abilities are straightforward and very effective at protecting you. On the ground their turrets are very strong (if a little time consuming to continually set up).

I don't know this for sure, but I think a lot of people are concerned about getting blown up in Space so they're hedging their bets by using Engineers. What I'd like to know is what kind of ship they're flying...

I played as a Tactical Officer in Beta and had a good time destroying things, but found Escorts extremely fragile. I'm giving a Borg Engineer a chance. So far, so good. Can't wait to get my Cruiser.

I think all three professions are pretty well balanced. I ran into a lot of engineers in beta too, but that was more because people had in their heads that they wanted to fly cruisers and that engineers would be somehow "better" at that. Which is wrong, but an easy mistake to make :)

- Tactical officers get ground abilities that provide them with combat buffs (and some debuffs), and special attacks. In space, they get abilities that increase damage (attack pattern alpha, etc)

- Engineering officers get ground abilities that recharge shields or create useful things - shield generators, phaser turrets, mines, etc. In space, they get abilities that increase the defenses of a ship - rotate shield frequency, brace for impact, etc.

- Science officers get ground abilities that heal, buff their friends, debuff opponents, or do crowd control and area-effect damage. In space, they get a lot of crowd control and debuff type abilities.

So... which to choose really depends on how you like to play :)
