By the way, tribbles are random drops on ground missions. Sometimes they're also found in crates. They eat food in your inventory to multiply, and can be used to heal you when out of battle (you are considered in battle when "RED ALERT" is flashing across the top of the screen). Note that they will also eat food in your equipped devices slots.
