Well, it's based on assumption, really.

Combining the sheer size of the Galaxy class main shuttlebay and the fact that while the Peregrine fighters are warp-capable, why waste the energy when you can park them in a larger ship until you approach the enemy fleet?

Besides, there's that one episode of TNG where Picard, Troi & Geordi are flying a runabout back to the Enterprise-D. One can assume that they were planning on landing it in the -D's main shuttlebay before they had to blow it up to save the ship. Shuttlebay 2 or 3 would be a pretty tight fit for a runabout.
