DS9 moved away from classic Trek in a lot more than this.
Starfleet suddenly jumping from 50 to 5.000 ships, Federation suicide attacks, fighter combat, NCOs, ...
Maybe it was because half the show was a blatant rip-off from B5 (mind you that I still love DS9 and that it had a lot of good story arcs, but it
fairly obvious), or maybe it was just because they figured that the current audience needs more action and explosions, but the difference to the previous series' is pretty glaring. Pretty sure DS9 would not exist in this way would Roddenberry have still been alive at that point - his death basically opened the door for the studio to take the franchise into a whole new direction. In a way it's similar to STO though, which is of course only logical as the game merely continues a path that has been well prepared by the franchise. And most people seem to like it that way, so ... I guess that's evolution, too.
