As Foxrocks aluded, there is indeed a steep learning curve, and a sense of awareness and tactics that will simply take time to mature. It sure has taken me some time, and I have noticed a definite improvement over the course of a year, although there are those far more attentive than me. Trying to be aware of what skills are currently being used by watching the buff icons for example, is something I am beginning to do.
PvP knowledge is formed from vast swathes of tid-bits from here and there, tribal knowledge for your fellow players and posts on here all add up over time to increase your level of understanding and effectiveness.
I would suggest looking very much at keybinding if you haven't already, and have preset attacks and defensive actions set to them.
One keybind set that is invaluable if you are pugging and without voice comms, are chat binds, and I would highly recommend them.
One common example is:
Bind x "c team focus attack on >>$target<<"
The above would bind your x key to print the message in your team chat (it is essential you join a team in EVERY case if you want to win), "Focus attack on Y", where Y is your current target. This can help tremendously in focusing your attacks with your team-mates.
It also builds the basis for other messages you can assign to other keys, requesting all manner of offensive or defensive assistance.
There is a keybind thread you may find very useful:
If you need any assistance, feel free to inbox me or /Tell me in game.
There is much out there, and that is just one example. I will not lie and say you do not have a mountain ahead of you, but it is scalable, and if you even get partway up, is the most rewarding side of the game.
Nothing in game is as satisfactory as beating another human, a tough target, resoundingly.
Oh, and if you haven't already, join a fleet. They will always form a major source of your information.
