Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree. Star Trek doesn't need the grimdark. That's not what it's about. If I want grimdark, I'll go read some 40K stuff. I've always liked Star Trek for the positive angles it puts on things. It's funny that many today would complain the characters of TNG are flat and uninteresting, but they've always felt more real to me than many other shows. I'm even showing TNG right now to my g/f, who's basically new to Trek, and she is LOVING it (especially Data). Simply put, I want heroes I can aspire to, not ultra-flawed characters that inspire little more than contempt from me, no matter how much I may be able to relate to them.

I like to think the universe I'm making for my games and stuff strikes a nice balance between the two extremes. Characters still exhibit many grimdark flaws and whatnot, but ultimately the message remains fairly positive about the ideas of human potential.
