Then again, maybe that's the point. The only energy weapons that can be mounted in the rear are those that overlap in the broadsides. (Beam Arrays and Turrets)
I've also thought Dual Beam Banks to the rear would be interesting, especially since torpedoes have the same arc and can be mounted aft. However, for a foe on your tail you would probably want burst damage, not DPS, unless you were planning on KEEPING him there. And in such a case I can see the Escort just running to the fore or broadsides. Same problem, just in reverse.
I find that when I am playing, I get really up close and personal Often I find for most of a space battle due to shield balacning and what have you, it is my aft that is pointed towards what I am shooting at. When this happens, most of my heavy hitting weapons (cannons and Dual Beam Banks) are of little use. This is especially true with my escort(it just moves way too fast for its turn rate). I can understand not putting dual cannons and dual heavy cannons on aft, but the single cannon and dual beam banks should. Likewise, as you say, we should be able to put turrets on fore.
