I'd prefer a horizontal advancement system be put in place versus another vertical one. That is, vertical advancement such as raising the level cap is tedious and annoyingi n that it invalidates all of your previous efforts at things such as gearing up.

A horizontal advancement system such as creating a system to gain more skill points without raising the level cap (e.g. STFs, end game story arcs, etc.) will give people something to work to, using the shiny new gear and ships that they've worked hard for and doesn't make them obsolete at the end of the journey. You can see both systems in place with other games already.

Vertical advancements can be seen in Anarchy Online, WoW, Age of Conan, etc.

Horizontal advancements can be seen in CoH and RIFT.
