While it's already been covered I'll just add a few points/questions.
How much mileage you are going to get out of attack patterns (the skill) ultimately depends on what captain and ship you will primarily be piloting.
If you're going to be in an Escort as a Tactical Captain, you definitely want at least 6 ranks of this skill and it's cheap enough that I put 9 ranks here personally.
If you're going to be a Sci or Eng in an Escort 6 ranks will be sufficient, you will most likely want at least 1 attack pattern (typically Attack Pattern Beta or Omega) and potentially 2 (I run beta 1 and omega 3 on my Sci in Escort).
If you're a Tac in any other ship, it's not going to give as much mileage but you still want a decent bonus on Attack Pattern Alpha (APA) - I'd recommend 6 ranks.
If you are a Sci or Eng in Cruiser or Sci ship, your value with from this skill will be minimal if even there at all.
If you specifically plan to be a Sci/Eng in a Cruiser or Sci ship - take a look at your L50 options and builds in the forums to see if you will really have a slot for an attack pattern BOFF skill, otherwise skip the skill.
