I use a free Odyssey (they were free during the 2nd anniversary event, I know someone was going to ask) and with my experience this is how I handle it:
It is a space boat, plain and simple. You should never expect it to manuver very well. When you want to stop from full impulse, always bring your ship to a stop first and then disengage full impulse. If you disengage FI and then stop immediately, you will find yourself powersliding for several km. I've found that you can actually make it go sideways at considerable speed if you do that. As for the RCS, I have one on my Odyssey and it only gives .9 degrees more turn per second.
Now that I think of it, I'm going to take off that RCS as soon as I next go in game and replace it with hull plating.
If you want "traction" get an escort.
