What the team is doing is brialliant! While STO will take place in the future beyond what we know from canon, they are modernizing starship classes from TOS and TMP. I think that this is a brilliant approach.

When I think of Star Trek and space exploration...I don't think of the TNG/DS9/VOY classes of ships...when Ithink of exploring strange new worlds, etc. I immediately think of TOS and TMP ships for some reason, so I am glad that we will be able to create modern variants of them!
