I somewhat agree with that, but I feel that consoles and ship abilities are distinct enough. Think about it. All science ships get the shield boost and automatic subsystem targeting. Engineering ships get +5 to all subsystems and stronger hull. And Escorts get +15 power to weapons and the weakest hull. I understand you suggesting all stations be universal except for two mandatory slots for one branch, depending on ship type.

But, if you think about it, it'd probably be that way anyways. For me, I'd want more of a tactical-science build so that 1) I have all my cannon abilities and such and 2) I have good defensive abilities. And depending on if I run a cruiser as a beamboat or battleship, I'd have a Eng-Sci or Eng-Tac ability. Eng-Tac if I was using torpedoes, of course. And Science vessels would get a Sci-Eng build.

It's just my opinion and in no way am I bashing yours. I'm just the discussion type and like to leave no stone unturned.
