Light is scattered by atmosphere... Especially blue light (the reason the sky is blue).

Light, unlike sound for instance, doesn't need a medium through which to travel. It does just fine in a vacuum.

The view is something close to what you might see on a very dark mountaintop on a very clear night. Only better.
