I have a human tactical officer with Astrophysicist and Creative traits as the captain of a science vessel.
For space combat I haven't noticed that being a tactical/science/engineering class makes any difference as the captain of the vessel. It makes a difference in ground combat in the types of attack modifiers you get and skills you have access to. However, if you build a solid away team with and put skill points in the leadership boxes for Engineering, Science, and Tactical teams it all balances out IMO.
