This is purely a "for fun" thing for those so inclined.

I, like many others, got the DDE that came with among other things, the ability to give your ship the NX "Experimental" Designation. Now... I'm not the hugest canon nerd out there - I've no problem bending, twisting breaking, or shrugging off canon when I feel like it... but I admit I was initially skeptical I'd ever actually use the NX designation.

After all, we aren't making our own ships from scratch... how are we going to justify this? (For those who care about such things of course)

Then it hit me:

The ship I was flying at the time, a rather unusual combination of a Shi'Khar saucer, a Centaur strut, Miranda Pylons and Nacelles... itself resembles nothing canon that I could think of... I had an "Experimental" ship on my hands and didn't even realize it right away. So the purpose of the thread is: What kind of ships have you come up with to maybe justify that NX designation?

I'll start with my own little experiment -

Now I want to note <,< This isn't a "pretty" vessel - no one said experiments were all sleek shiny prototypes or anything - this is an 'ugly'; a ship built from the parts of other ships because there's not enough of any one kind of parts to make a single ship; but there are enough parts of enough different clsses you can cram em together and get something that'll go.

So I bring you, the Federation's 'Medical ship on the cheap'; the Joy* class.

USS Joy, NX - 93507
Commanding Officer - Lt. 'Lauren' (16 of 230)
Executive Officer - Ensign Vanis Levan

Front

Side

3/4 Rear

Belly

A brief description:

The "Joy" class wasn't initially intended to be a class of ships at all. Rather, the project was originally commissioned to combine the irreparable but salvageable remains of two ships - the USS Denver and USS Sahara with a stockpile of spare parts for the Miranda class. The intention was to create a hospital and rescue ship that could handle standard rescue patrol work and crew recovery duties, mostly safely behind the lines; to at least get some use out of the material on hand without having to break it all down and start building brand new vessels with it. The thought was that this stopgap vessel could free up more well equipped ships for front line duty.

The USS Joy's first cruise proved surprisingly successful. While the ship is under-armed and under armored for a front line vessel, it's search and rescue missions were carried out well above expectations given it's questionable birth. It's tough, sturdy, and surprisingly dependable in defiance of it's cobbled together nature. Further, it's cargobay is partially converted into an expanded sickbay ward for less serious patience, allowing the Joy to carry and treat more wounded than a similarly sized vessel. This capacity allowed her to meet, and on occasion exceed similarly assigned Miranda class vessels within the search and rescue role.

The success of the design and the rapid turnaround possible when ships are salvaged rather than scrapped has resulted in an order for two more Joy class ships. Additionally, Joy class ships, being assigned to behind-the-lines duty, can be captained by relatively new officers of lower rank, freeing up more experienced personnel. While they are not Starfleet's first choice, they do allow the fleet to stretch itself further - a critical ability in this time of crisis.

Armament*: Fore: 1 Dual Phaser Beam Bank, 1 Phaser Array Rear: 1 Phaser Turret

Crew: 200

Length: Varies slightly between 220 and 250 meters; depending on exactly how the component vessels are combined.
Beam: Varies wildly.

*There is no room to store adequate torpedo stocks for combat of any reasonable length and still maintain the medical facilities, it was decided instead to rip out the torpedo tubes and replace them with a simple, reliable dual phaser beam bank. While not as powerful as torpedoes in a combat situation, this offers the ship thee cutting tools for extracting ships from asteroids and other entanglements, and is stiill enough to ward away raiders.

----------------

Admittedly it's not the most exciting Star Trek ship a fan has ever concieved <,< but, for something I came up with on the fly last evening based around the oddity of having the NX designation available and a very odd looking ship... I just kinda ran with it.

So what's everyone else come up with? Anyone else doing things of this nature?

The "Joy" class? Sounds like a space roving brothel.

I kid! I kid!

I used my NX designation but only because I could. I prefer the NCC designation, honestly.

Well, at least it's not the U.S.S. Happy Ending.

I haven't used my NX designation yet. I got to LTC before the digital download code arrived and didn't realize they wanted 1500 merits to switch the designation from NCC to NX.

I admit the name is a little odd; but I was thinking -

1) Former Borg captain recently freed from the collective - just basically setting an upbeat mood for the character. (Like I said, I came up with it before I actually thought about the whole NX-thing)

2) It's a search-and-rescue ship; what else are you going to feel when you see it coming to pick up your stranded rump?

There's plenty of "place name" classes, plenty of "Valor" "Defiant" "Vigilant" and whatnot... why not something well... cheerful?

<^_^>

*smiley added to clarify mood of post - sounded kinda grumpy <o.<>*

No no I really was just kidding. I like the name...even more so with your supplemental explanation. Makes perfect sense.

Hehe, I figured it wasn't a big thing <._.>b I just wanted to explain better because I really do know it's not your 'typical' name for a starship class <'x'> It's something I should have put in the OP <,< but I ddn't think of it. (No rest for the weary)

Would that really be such a bad thing? There seems to be a distinct lack of brothels in the future and quite frankly that concerns me. What's the point of world peace if you can't pay for poon?

Y'know...thats true. The holodeck does kinda cancel out the need for brothels (and you don't have to worry about all those pesky things like STDs and paying extra for the kinky stuff)

I'm saving the NX designation for my final Deep Space Science Vessel. Name to be yet decided...
