Hi guys, is there any point using different ranks of the same ability or is it always better to use different skills?
For example on my science officer is it better to use:
Science Team I
Science Team II
Hazard Emitters I
Science Team II
Also do ship consoles of the same type stack?
For example if I had 2 +10% to shields capacity would that give me 20% to shield capacity?
If you have multiples of the same ability, all it means is that you can use it more often. For example, if you used Science Team II then Science Team I will go into a short cooldown - shorter then if you had used it though. It will be available for use way before Science Team II is ready again. Same theory if you had two officers both with Science Team II. This works in a similar fashion with any powers that operate off the same system. So if you had an officer with Engineer Team I and another with Science Team II, same thing would happen because they both work off the system "Crew".
There's a 20s shared cooldown on skills of the same subsystem (Science Team I and II are both under the Crew subsystem). Science Team has a 45s cooldown, so using rank I and II together would let you use it twice as often.
Having learned that the similar abilities share a short cooldown the hard way (I trained up a BO in the second skill before trying it out....)
I can say that having 2 BO's with the same skill, while making it so you can use it slighty more often, really isnt worth it. By the time the shared CD is up the first skill is just about up as well.
I think you'd get more utility having different skills
it's simple math. if a skill has a cool down of 30 sseconds (most tactical attack skills), then two skills with a global cool down of 20 seconds (40 seconds total) means a loss of 10 seconds.
if a skill has a cooldown of 45 seconds and lasts for 30 seconds (science team), then two skills with a global cooldown of 20 seconds means a surplus of 20 seconds of buff, or in other words, infinite buff.
