I understand that I should promote my Bridge Officers as I get consoles that can accommodate higher ranked BOffs but my question is should I promote BOffs who I don't have consoles for in order to get their extra abilities while on Away Missions?
For example, if I'm captaining a T2 Science Vessel with one lieutenant-rank console, I can see promoting one of my science officers so her lieutenant ability can be used in space. Is it worthwhile or cost-effective to also promote one or two of the other BOffs I normally take down on Away Missions, even if I won't be able to use their space abilities yet?
It's kind of an odd question. I'm not sure why you are asking it. BOs can use all of their available ground abilities based on rank, so if that's important to you and you have the merits then go ahead and promote them. If not, then don't...
Well, the reason I'm asking is because it costs hard-earned merits to promote them. I would need to use up about half the merits I have in order to promote just a couple of tac BOffs I bring on away missions. I'm interested in what experienced players do re: their promotions and whether they think it's worth the expense.
I've been promoting all of my officers, and thus far I haven't run into any shortages in merits (not even close!). Then again, ground combat is generally easy, so if you're someone who wants to have those merit points around just in case, you might not have to bother.
