i recommend to read this completely before judging...

edit: now that the interiors are ingame,
i agree that a crew-wide uniform-customization would be more important,
but as second step this idea will make you feel more "at home" on your ship...
and it might avoid the "alien invasion" we all experience these days by the rare-to-get-BOs
and bring us back more individual bridge crews...

PLEASE look up the MAJOR UPDATE of this idea on PAGE 4 as well!
i COMPLETELY redesigned this idea there to become a possible part of the UGC-tools!

my new idea are "Nightshift-BOs", as i call them so far...

beside the list of waiting recruit-BOs you get an additional list in your overview,
where you may send your actual BOs into the nightshift...

once this is made it is not returnable!
so this list will be no BO-storage...

Nightshift-BOs cannot be assigned to your ship-stations or your away-team...
but they stay customizable at the tailor...

overall there are two reasons to implement these Nightshift-BOs:

- if you replace your actual BOs by new ones, the former wont be lost at all...
players that see more than just redshirts in their BOs will appreciate that!

- Nightshift-BOs will replace generic-BOs that show up on your bridge...
i this became far more usable now upgraded ship-interiors became actual...

now a couple of examples where this idea might be usable:

- you really care about the optics of your BOs, their uniforms and your bridge...
but either you use a bridge where just 8 or 9 BOs are shown and you miss some of yours
or more than 10 are shown and generic-BOs shown up, who misfit in your crew-/ uniform-style...
at a 12-BOs-bridge the use of just 2 Nightshift-BOs would make it perfect...

- you actually hold the maximum of 10 BOs,
you took a good work on them til u got your favorite mix of skills, including rare ones...
and then you get a new BO as reward, f.e. the male borg at khitomer accord...
you really want to have this reward BO, but not destroy your actual BO-setup...
in this case you might send the reward-BO directly into Nightshift and enjoy him on your ship...
and i simply expect that the male borg wont stay the only special BO-reward in the future...

- since we have got upgraded ship-interiors,
including new rooms like hallways, the engineering-room or the sickbay,
you meet far more generic-BOs on your ship...

i know not every player is interested in,
but the Nightshift-BOs would be a good way to personalize your ship!
your main-BOs would obviously fit best on your bridge,
but you would "meet" your Nightshift BOs in your sickbay, engineering or just walking down the hallways...
moreover i might imagine that new BO-spots might added to your bridge,
f.e. i use a galaxy-variant-bridge with 9 BOs shown,
but there might be easily added one each standing at the side stations plus one more sitting on a free chair...
these additional spots might be preset for Nightshift BOs and are randomly loaded out of the list...
this would give the bridge more individualism and more life by changing appearance of Nightshift-BOs...

actually i have to watch that more and more crews get similar to each other...
it is not that surprising if we we mind the "more special" BOs we might collect:
KA-Borg, Female-Borg, Photonic-BO, DC-Exchange-BO, the Breen-BO...
i tend to add an Efficient-Saurian-BO and an Human-BO for their space-traits to this list too...
so ironically anyone who collects these special BOs makes his crew more and more common,
because his half crew is already determined by these BOs...
im sure there will be more special BOs in future,
so soon Nightshift-BOs might be needed to make our crew individual again...

- if our BOs get ever access to off-duty clothes,
some of the Nightshift could be signed as civilians and get seperate places,
so you may find someone like Neelix in your lounge f.e. ...

- for sure me personnaly would re-build every BO i had to discharge before
and since i play an alien-race i would add some Nightshift-BOs of my race...
just to meet some "known faces" here and there
or maybe you just miss a ferengi or a trill on your ship? would be no prob anymore...

moreover Nightshift-BOs may open up new mission-ideas
and take over different npc-roles...
please mind these as examples behind the edge of the original idea:
i might imagine your away-team and you just return from a ground-mission,
but meanwhile your ship was attacked and bordered!
now you have to re-conquer your ship and free the Nightshift-BOs stuck on your bridge...

or your Nightshift-BOs are just "the faces" that pop-up at message-windows...
i guess with a bit of time this list would grow longer and longer...

i hope you like this idea, but please feel free to post any kind of answers and constructive critics...

edit: please read on, there are more details in the following posts...

This sounds great to me. I really hate that those guys in the generic NPC uniform are on my bridge. I hate it twice as much when they're on my bridge but one of my BOffs isn't because I happen to not have enough Engineers on my crew and too many Science officers or something. You! Red shirt! Off my bridge! One of my senior staff could be there.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing a duty-shift type setup for BOs. Have multiple configurations based on the duty shift (three full rotations). Of course, this would be a nicety. I'd much rather see the BOs operating with a Command Structure first, but that's a different discussion.

But yes, I wouldn't mind seeing at least a "night shift" roster. Maybe, depending on the time of the person playing, during their nighttime, these BOs would come out to man the bridge, instead of the regular BO duty roster.

sounds really interessting... low prio, but make the game more realistic... especially when ship interiors comes live...

yes and no...
i know to many ppl this is low prio and not important,
they prefer work on game-mechanics and i may understand that 100%ly...
but others, like me, would love to see this kind of "atmosphere-upgrades",
and yeah, especially when ship interiors comes live,
id prefer too see personalized BOs instead of a mass of generics...

i would like to give my complete actual "BO-situation" as example:

yes Im a BO-nerd... whatsoever ^^

there are a couple of species i simply like and want to see on my bridge...

i wanted to have a cardassian on my bridge, so i overworked an alien-BO...
but her former look fitted to the original look of my cptn when generated...
now i actually miss that look completely, but defenitaly want it back...

i had 2 male klingons yet, so i replaced one by a female klingon...
but i completed so many ground-missions with that BO,
i dont like to let him go at all... him as Nightshift-BO would be awesome...

moreover i replaced a betazoid female by a female alien,
same name, same look, but orion-style...
thought it to be just a change of the skin-colour,
but it looks so diff that it feels like complete new BO...
so the former betazoid is a new Nightshift-candidate to me...

ive got the male Borg from Khitomer...
definitaly a want-to-have!
and again: for sure not the last special BO upcoming...
i truly believe there will be more reward-BOs in the future
and actually another Borg-BO (hopefully more "liberated") and caitians
are announced to come into c-store... and yes i want them too...
but back to KA-Borg: had to discharge another alien,
which fits to my actual and final alien-style...
now my cptn feels pretty alone :p
so again: aliens of my species on the Nightshift-list...

like most ppl i always wanted an efficience-saurian...
but had no luck to get one with even 2 chars...
now i had the incredible luck to find one in exchange for just 5.ooo credits
but again... need to replace someone...
have actually two andorian officers...
even they are no science like the saurian, i will replace one of them...
so discharge one, replace with a rebuild of my sci-officers and discharge the original sci..
so again one of the andorian to my Nightshift-list...

i hope to get the holographic BO very soon...
will definitely stay on the recruit list for a while...
dunno how to build him in... and as long they stay not-customizable
and wont look "more" holographic than an human with sci-kit
he will probably stay candidate for a while...

but my main prob is this:
my bridge starts to feel more and more strange...
even i get most of the species i simply like to have,
it seems my ship consists just of aliens, borg and holographic BOs in future...
even now i just hold two humans and a trill on my bridge,
which are last to make it feel "federation-like"...

so finally my actual BO-wishlist, which i would like to see as my Nightshift-BOs:
- a bolian, which was my very first BO and i had to discharge later
- the male klingon, was one of my very first BOs too
- the betazoid i replaced
- the female alien that fitted to the original look of my cptn
- the andorian i will have to replace soon
- the holographic-BO would be probably Nightshift if stays not customizable
- even a couple of aliens that fits to my actual cptn-species
- a caitian as soon they come live
- a liberated Borg (yes just as Nightshift-BO would be enough to me and worth buying it)
- a ferengi (simply would like to have one)
- a couple of humans to avoid the mentioned "alien, borg and holographic-invasion"
- any upcoming reward-BOs

and im sure this list will grow longer and longer...

hope even the ones, who dont care that much bout their BOs look
may understand why these things are important to some players
and are of higher prio to us than some game-mechanics

Yes, nothing is more ANNOYING than entering my bridge and finding some no name, no rank random NPC crewman (who isn't even in proper uniform) sitting in the First Officer's seat, while the BO I have designated as my First Officer, sits at the Conn like a lowly ensign!

just a small update to the list of my nightshift-candidates:

there will be mercenary outfits soon,
and if our BOs ever will get access to the off-duty clothes,
i would love to see some of them in my crew...
i guess it would make an awesome away-team-optic...

pretty same to the "7of9"- and "T'Pol"-suits as soon they will come live...
but probably off-duty too...

if my "like-to-see BO-options" would be granted, (look at my signature)
i could set up a far longer list of BOs i would just generate to be Nightshift...

i love the ideas developed by the OP. i would recommend 2 things. first, limit the number of night-shift boffs. If you limited it by the size of your interior, small interiors would probably only need 5 or 6 NSBoffs, while Large could probably handle 15 to 20. Too many of them would become a management nightmare. 2) have them provide some type of bonus for your ship. Maybe add a point to your weapons systems if you have a tactical NSBoff. An engineering bonus could be applied to shields and engines if you have an engineer on the night shift. Finally a science officer on the night shift could boost auxillary and deflectors. A passive bonus. What do you think?

1) i added a limit in the major update i posted above you
it is always the same amount of NSBOs like regular BOs you may have...
so it "grows" with your toon while ranking up... and with getting larger ships...

2) even a passive bonus would be a very difficult thing...
i tried to avoid yet that they give any benefit, for a simple reason:
they should customize your ship / crew / interiors, but shouldnt become a part of your gaming setup...
i fear that ppl would feel forced to have certain NSBOs again, instead of a free choice...
if these benefits would stack it could even get too powerful with more NSBOs...
the only way i could imagine it right now if it is limited to the rare-reward-BOs,
f.e. if you give up the Khitomer-Borg as an active part of your crew and send him to the Nighshift...
