# 1 Diligent Class

I realize this starship is a fan fiction, but with the talk of doing a fan ship, I thought I'd toss this one out there.

I'm not sure of their real names, but the original design was done by ASR CO COVENTRY from Sci-Fi Meshes and the 3D Modeling was done by Medjai from Sci-Fi Meshes.

I think it would be a great addition to the Star Trek Online universe. I'm not sure what legal steps need to be taken, but it has become a popular ship amongst Star Trek role players.

Here is the link on Sci-Fi Meshes with posted dimensions by Medjai and a link to download the 3d Model.

This is a great idea for an STO ship! Definetely would be a great choice for an Escort. Alot of people would be overjoyed to see some new escorts in game.

Good to see you Costigan. I'll be making a return to STO in about a month, maybe less. Is Horizon's Fleet still running or is it a ghost fleet?

It's important to keep in mind that Cryptic can't use other people's ship designs without the permission of the creators (which generally requires payment) and CBS.

Horizon's is quiet, but log in and look me up, there are a few of that are still together.

I understand this, which is why I included information on the creators and mentioned that there would probably be some legalese that needed to take place. The scanning mini-game was purchased from a player, I don't see why they can't work out some arrangement with the creator. I mean, many RPG's use the graphics in their Play by Bulletin Board/E-Mail/Etc games. Maybe they only want acknowledgement and to see their ship come to life in the game!

Unless the ship was published as part of an official contest (like the Luna for the Titan novel sereis) I have yet to see such a thing as a fandesign becoming part of (soft)-canon.

Cryptic has said they plan to run a competition where players can submit a ship design that will make it into the game, if they don't contact this ship designer, I will and see if they will submit it as part of that contest. I think it was very well thought out and designed. A lot of work went into it and It would be great to recognize that by giving it life by being apart of STO.

There is a first time for everything as designs have to come from somewhere.

Unless I am seeing it wrong it is too big to be an escort since it looks to have a sizable shuttle bay but what do I know an Akira is an escort.

According to Medjai, it is only slightly bigger than the Defiant Class starships. In his notes, when he did the graphics he stated,

This dimensions work perfectly!!!...
According to a few sources on the net, but I'll quote from Memory Alpha, the Defiants dimensions are:

Hope this helps put it in perspective. Though I would assume it could be scaled to whatever size is needed.

From the creator of that ship class .... ASR-Coventry, aka. Ed Bell ...

Quote:
BASIC STATISTICS
Class Name : DILIGENT
Classification : Escort
Type : DE (Escort Destroyer)
Model Number : I

PHYSICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Length : 187.5 m
Beam : 114.3 m
Draft : 37.2 m
Displacement : 404,060 mt

COMPLEMENT
Total Standard : 101
Officers : 7
Crew : 59
Marines : 35

Passengers : 5
and the notes they wrote for the class ...

Quote:
The DILIGENT-class escort was built with the intention of replacing the aging THUNDERBOLT/DEFIANT spaceframe with a newer, more modern design. Although she is still one of the smallest destroyers in service, the extra volume allows relative to THUNDERBOLT allows her to carry a full platoon of Marines. The somewhat larger spaceframe also allows the design to carry more supplies, thereby addressing the key flaw in the THUNDERBOLT -- lack of cruising range. However, the design incorporates everything that made the DEFIANT spaceframe a success: relatively small, highly maneuverable and, above all, a potent offensive punch for a ship of her size.

DILIGENT's main asset are her weapons array and tactical sensor systems. Unlike the THUNDERBOLT which was built around a set of narrow-angle forward-firing pulse phasers, she mounts more conventional parallel arrays which give her a far broader field of fire than her cousin. This allows DILIGENT to engage multiple targets from various attack angles. This allows the escort to place herself squarely between multiple hostile targets and her charges at all times. A large portion of her hull volume is dedicated to 7 capacitor banks to power 11 arrays. While sacrificing the hard-hitting concentrated punch of the pulse phasers hurts her maximum damage potential against a single opponent, she has nearly the flexibility of a light cruiser in her firing patterns. Her torpedoes are the longer-range, harder-hitting Mark II flux torpedoes. While the design is still too small to handle the multi-fire Mk III tube, she has an advantage oft an aft firing tube over the THUNDERBOLT. Her shields are also reinforced relative to those of THUNDERBOLT and her hull is coated with advanced ceramic ablative armor. She also carries a limited point defense laser system to further aid her ability to protect her charges.

The DILIGENT possesses 6 decks; though no science labs of any value are to be found on this warship, there is plenty of space for its officers and crew to maintain normal -- if spartan -- quarters for extended missions, alleviating the overcrowded feeling of THUNDERBOLT during long patrols.
