So, I'm starting the emblem grind for this ship... and the character in question also has some gear needs where emblems could be useful as well. So I figured before I went any further I'd just ask a couple questions about the ship >.<
1) I'm assuming when split off, the split off sections fire phasers... do I need Phaser skill to use these effectively? I'm currently specced Tetryon and I rather like my blue beams of doom; I'd hate to have to switch to phasers, but I'm willing to do it if necessary.
2) Is it worth it? I love the idea behind MVAM, I played around with it on Tribble a bit and liked what I saw... but that's no substitute for spending a lot of time with the ship and using it regularly. I figure someone here has actually spent some real time with it could give me a better idea of how it actually handles.
*edit* part of the last paragraph just... didn't show up. Weird. Fixed now.
The short answer is yes on phasers. the reality is that I never noticed a significant increase in damage to lock me in to using phasers. The MVAM console in my opinion is awesome for the beta section. Especially if you turn fight with some of the KDF escorts in PvP.
Also useful if your science is to lure an opponent away, pop photonic fleet, separate, and throw in some reman fighters. The MVAM and MVAE both benefit from the console so it opens up a lot of choices depending on your play style.
For a fed escort IMHO it is the most versatile escort. Shield tanking, Photonic shockwave, Gravity well. High DPS.... the possibilities are very good.
MVAM is sort of like Photonic Fleet; good for bringing more fire on a target (especially those "battleship" types) and as a distraction, since it splits the enemy's fire (and attention) between 2-3 additional targets.
And keep in mind, the MVAM ability is a console that comes with the MVAM Advanced Escort, so you can switch it between the MVAM Escort and the AE you get at Rear Admiral. It's what I did, since I like the BOff set up on the RA AE better than I do the MVAM AE.
Don't pay full price if you intend to buy. Wait for a sale like I did. At first, I swore I wouldn't buy it until they fixed some issues with it and that happened. It's still not perfect but it's a lot better than it was when it first hit the C-Store. I use Disruptors on mine currently so you can tell which section I pilot when separated. I'd like to see this fixed in future and the same for the Galaxy Refit and the Lance on the Galaxy X. The best thing about MVAN is, you sort of get the best of all three ship classes. Regardless of what career your toon is, there is a section that coresponds with it. This ship can eat up a lot of spec points though but I doubt you'll be disappointed with it.
