What are the balancing concerns, in regards to PvP, of implementing a more detailed method of scanning?

What would be too much information? Would it reveal ship equipment only, or could it reveal a bridge officer load out too?

Would this be too great of an advantage for cloaking ships? If so, what are some potential counter measures or restrictions (i.e. distance, alert status, aux level, tie to deflector dish stats).

Are there significant enough drawbacks to make a /check or /scan a detriment to PvP? What about potential benefits?

Are you concerned about elitist attitudes? More rapid expansion of flavor of the month builds?

Responding in context to the other thread where you initially voiced this idea, I don't feel the answer to our problems should be another skill, simply a fix of the bug.

In context to this as a standalone topic, I wouldn't have issue with someone knowing everything about my ship, but as a user I would be concerned about information overload.

As it stands, it is already possible to tell quite a lot about your foe, what weapons they are running, what sets, what BOFF skills, simply from the various visual information at hand. The only things we aren't really privvy too, are the BOFF consoles.

Again, I don't really think the solution to our issues is to have better abilities to report other players, but a straight removal of the bug.

To clarify, while this would likely help deter or reveal exploits, that is not my primary motivation behind being interested in seeing this added.

After the first few kills you should kinda know what everyone was running. I have to keep reminding my fleetmates to watch target status bars so no one alphas a player with 3 extend shields on em. Or who just pwned me in 1 pass.

I think the idea is good, but it would most likely be a sci ship only kinda deal. And well I'm sure everyone would just love some more sci goodness. (others not so much )

I think some more focus in flight angles and thinks like vental/dorsal sheilding

Oh wait a minute I just had a thought.... Is there anywhere in trek where the crew knew the EXACT shield strength of each of the targets facings? I don't remember one, just acknowledgemet of them being up or not. Please someone shoot that down if you can remember something.

But that would be cool, to have to scan a ship to find out how much shields they have on whichever side. But there would be so many drawbacks with how strong healing currently is.

Let's just say that seeing what the other guy has on would *not* help with revealing Voldemort Jr. Combat logs are the only way, so this is not a solution to that problem. I dont want to discuss more than that on that issue.

Otherwise, part of flying an escort is memorizing what each opponent has to find gaps in healing. Maybe a detailed sensor scan would work..

I would enjoy having science vessels - whom supposed boast great sensors, to be able to see the power levels of their targets. That would allow a better sense on how effective their 'Target subsystem' innate ship powers would be (as well as apply them more strategically - they're much weaker at endgame than they are at LtC ranks).

I'm a bit weary of making this a class specific ability. It's a very basic mechanic in so many other games I don't quite understand why it wouldn't be included here. Given our advanced sensor technology it's not too much of a stretch, lol.

I picture basically this:
  • Command: /check, /scan: Entered in the text line or even bound to a key.
  • Effect: Opens a status window (like the one we see when we check our own status) that shows your targets equipment but which obviously can not be edited by you.
  • Person being /scanned receives a message that "x is scanning you". This acts as your tactical officer alerting you that you are being scanned, take appropriate action.
  • Altering equipment closes the window, requiring that the /scan be conducted again.
  • Range:
    • Sector space: No range limitation
    • System space: 10km - If you can shoot it, you can scan it, and vice versa
    • Cloaked scanning: Apply a stealth debuff to the ship conducting the scan due to the increased sensor activity. As long as the scan window is open (the scan is running) there should be an intermittent ping on the minimap revealing the general location of the scanner. Cloaked ships can not be /scanned unless other appropriate sensor abilities are already revealing the cloaked ships location.
  • Possible time delay (3-5 seconds) before information is revealed

I don't know, I've tried to consider some balance issues but I'm sure I've missed or forgotten something. I'd really like to see this implemented since it's a pretty basic idea really. I know that there are bigger fish to fry right now, but I'm kind of surprised this hasn't caught more traction.

If memory serves, in LOTRO you can just right-click someone, and choose "investigate" (or something to that effect.

This will allow you to see the gear of other players. I'd like this to be possible in STO as well.

As for boff slots... The good players already know what skills other good players use, so the advantage would be for the new players mostly I guess.

Powerlevels? NO! Do not reveal this information to a cloaked Raptor!

Set the scan range to 10km, and block scanning when cloaked, so players can't sneak around and gather all the info about their opponents before attacking. This will make it really difficult to gather information during combat, but possible if you REALLY want to know!

I really dont like "inspect" or view what builds someone have with a url or ingame mechanics, I given advice and builds out freely but I don't like the idea of my /my teams setup being disected before a game have even started because of cloaked scans.
