I've just gotten back into STO with Season 4, and loving it. Love how time-friendly the game seems to me, how easy it is to play with friends, etc.

However, compared to my old favorite MMO (City of Heroes), the whole character creation/advancement is a little rich/complex for me. As such, I'm a little nervous with allocating skill points and such for my tactical officer (only character, from launch, just hit Captain). I'm pretty much only PVE, and play mostly with friends or solo, so I was wondering...
  • It seems like the most "obvious" choices are safe; is that so? I'm not overly interested in min/maxing here, just having a solid, playable character (Tactical, currently flying around in a Cruiser and an Escort).
  • Am I doing myself a huge disservice by splitting myself between Cruisers and Escorts? I enjoy both, and because of how often I play, alting doesn't interest me at this time. Again, not looking to min/max, just be solid/playable.
  • I'm assuming the common (white) equipment is baseline, with anything better being icing on the cake? Can I go the whole game-ish with only common stuff if I had/wanted to? I've never been one for the equipment treadmill found in some other games.
  • Is this game as forgiving to futzing around/experimenting with stuff as City of Heroes? Eventually I do want to try other officer/ship combinations, but I don't want to do so if its super easy to "gimp" myself. Again, don't need/want to be a top-tier performer, but I do want to be able to play and have fun without putting my foot through the screen. I prefer to play my way, my style, etc. So far I seem to be able to, but I don't know how higher levels will be.

Loving being back, and very glad I got my lifetime sub ^_^

It's pretty simple. Get an emergency power to shields, or two. Get a tactical team 1. And you should be able to tackle anything.

For PvE, the need to put points into your ship is not really there. Put points into beams or cannons, whichever you're using. And put points into torpedo and which ever one you're using. Then just skill for whatever you are using. On the Skill tree there is a drop down menu on the upper right side. There it will list all of your skills.

For weapons white will get you through everything. Anything else is just that much better. They go from white to, green, blue and purple.

For the most part, you can roll any combo of captain and ship with any boff abilities and any skill points and you will do great. The game is very forgiving, or easy which ever you prefer.

Agreed with Koopa. The only time skill point specs really come into play is PvP, where being fully specced for the ship and weapon type you are using as well as supporting your primary BOff abilities is really the difference between killing and being killed. If you are just constantly fighting the computer then it doesn't really matter much what you do.

At some point it certainly helps to specify into a particular ship, but if you're just exploring the game I wouldn't worry about it. You can handle any of the content in the game even with a sloppily statted character. It certainly helps to have a well defined plan, but you can't really have a well defined plan till you understand what you strategy is and what you like the character to be. You certainly can't go wrong with weapon enhancing abilities. Check out the Efficiency Skills, The Performance Skills, as well as the Command line skills that offer you bonuses to defense, accuracy, damage resistance and so forth. Those will probably be more useful to you particularly since you are trying to toy around with various ship types at this time, and will carry over to whichever ship you use.
