Hello everyone!

I am a Tac officer. I currently fly the Defiant-R, but would like to try something different. I have heard that the Excelsior is the closest cruiser you can get to a escort so I was thinking of trying it out. However, before I go spend money and time on this I thought I would see what you guys think. Is it a viable thing? What are some good builds? That sort of thing. I have seen he Excelsior do some crazy damage, but also tank like crazy so what do you guys think? Thanks in advance

Apparently the rage is Cannons up front with Turrets aft, use CRF off of the LTC Tactical slot and DEM off of your CMDR Engineer slot.

Not sure of the specifics, but that's because I'm an engineer. I will say that it has a ton of Engineering slots available, so it can definitely run a hefty tank. Not as many personnel as a Star Cruiser or Galaxy, but more than a Tactical Captain is used to.

Hm, that is interesting. I wouldn't have thought that. Thanks! Any other ideas?

Well, from an Engineering point of view, unless you have one of those ungodly purple tactical BOff's with Beam Overload III or Target Shield Subsystems III, the ship's worth is debatable.

It has great turn-rate, but suffers in crew size. It has a ton of Engineering slots, but the Ensign slot is almost unneeded in my opinion. The best LTC Tactical power (and the one that I use) for my tank setup is Attack Pattern Delta II.

I use the same setup on the Excelsior that I use on my Galaxy-X: 1 Phaser BA and 2 DBB with a Quantum Torp fore, 3 Phaser BA and a Quantum Torp aft. I have High Yield Torpedo I, Beam Overload II, and Attack Pattern Delta II on the Tactical, with Directed Energy Modulation and 2 Emergency Power to Shields III spread across my CMDR and LTC Engineer. For Science I use Hazard Emitters II and Science Team I.

Consoles are Field Generator (+% Cap), Neutronium Plate, EPS Relay, and RCS Accelerator for Engineering; 2 Directed Energy Manifold and Warhead Yield for Tactical; Hazard Emitters and Assimilated Console for Science.

This is just my tank build for my Engineer, so I doubt it would work well for you, but maybe you can get something out of it.

EDIT: Added my consoles, thought it might be helpful.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it

I actually have a BOff with Beam Overload 3

This is what I was thinking of doing, after reading what you said, and my own thoughts

Tactical:
Tactica Team 1
Attact Pattern Delta 1
Beam Overload 3

Eng:
Ens. Engineering Team 1
Lt. EPtS 1, RSP 1
Cmd. EPtA 1, EPtS 2, AuxtSIF 2, DEM 3

Sci:
Hazard Emitters 1
TSS 2

Then I was going to do 8 beam arrays.

Consoles:
Eng: 2 EPS flow regulators, +35% to shields, Then nuetronium alloy, or +13% to shield regen.
Tac: 3 +26 to beam arrays
Sci: Borg, and not sure, maybe +18 to deflector field

Power would be 125, 50, 50, 25 (If that is possible, not sure)

Lucky you! I got a purple science officer with Viral Matrix III (at least I think I did, otherwise how did my Sci BOff get it?).

Setup seems solid; if you do decide to go for it, post the results.

Three single cannons and one torp fore, three beam arrays and one torp aft. (my torp choices are hargh/hargh or hargh/breen mine torpedo).

the ship's got enough maneuverability to keep things in the 37.5 degree 'broadside' arc where all 6 energy weapons fire, does great damage, and lets you run Scatter Volley 2 and Fire at Will 2 or Fire at Will 3 and Scatter Volley 1 (with tac team 1 either way) for lots of AoE damage and more damage than just running beams.

I've tried the Cannon/Turret combo on my Tac' Excelsior toon. I't was neat, but it never seemed to be able to finish of an enemy. I'm now using DBB/QTORP/BA/QTORP . I'm sitting at 17.5 d/s right now, so I tend to stay in arc for the DBB.
