As a tac VA do I lose something trying to build a galaxy X, galaxy retrofit as a cannon boat ala jj abrams new enterprise?

Well joking aside, the biggest problem you will have is the turn rate. Cannons, particularly Dual Heavy Cannons, have narrower firing arcs than beam arrays and the low turn rate will have you struggling to keep oponents in your firing arcs, especially when they figure out you're using cannons.

An Alpha Strike strategy won't work too well either. While you may be able to position yourself effectively for one with your cloak, you won't have access to the higher Tac Boff powers that make this effective on escorts. Trying this in tandem with the Phaser Lance won't help as it drains a lot of weapons power on use, further weakening your cannons.

The cloak and phaser lance are best used with a Torpedo: High Yield power to soften up your oponents at the beginning of an encounter, if you're using cannons you'll run into the same problem as using cannons normally, firing arcs.

Though I may have missed your point. What, exactly, are you trying to accomplish with cannons on this ship?

just a theme really, I am not a min/max player, but I dont want to be gimped either or hurt a team in a stf. Is my only option to go with beams then or to use an escort? I really dont like the small ships.

Well Dual Heavy Cannons are definately out of the question, even against NPC's the turn rate on the Gal-x will mean you'll spend an awful lot of time not firing. You could try Dual or Single Cannons with aft Turrets but you'll have to make some sacrifices with your Engi consoles to boost your turn rate but you'll still struggle.

Another option is to make a Turret Boat, the DPS isn't great but will be consistant no matter where your enemy is, also Procs seem to hit more often (for me at least) making some energy types effective. An essential power for this is Cannon: Scatter Volley. This can be effective, I've tried it before but others do it better than I, you may want to ask around for tips with this setup.

Frankly though, you're better off with beams. You won't have to spend Skill Points on Beams and Cannons (the Phaser Lance is enhanced by Beam Skill), you'll have decent broadside DPS and if you load a Torp Launcher on your fore you can decloak and use Phaser Lance and T:HY to punch a hole in the enemy.

I disagree, I used two dual heavy cannons, a beam and quant torp on front combined with two XI purple turn rate consoles and I have no problems at all, beam in back with two turrets and another quant torp tops it our, pop a engine battery and I can turn with the best of them.

i was thinking of try the excelsior refit also, has a slightly better turn rate for my turret/ cannon boat only cant use dhc. i kind of like the boff layout, only 1 tac but its 3 skills so actually better than a 2, 1 tac boff set up on the x. i can go back to beams i guess.
