When you say it does "nothing" do you get a DNS error message or anything at all? Surely there's something happening here that keeps you from logging in. Are you able to check your account information by logging into the forums/C-Store, etc., from a totally different computer, preferably from one not behind your current setup so we can eliminate a possible routing/NAT issue? If you can, then you'll know it's your computer and not the account.
What about firewalls? Do you have one, is it not disabled? You should be able to disable your firewall by right-clicking the icon near the clock and selecting disable or turn off or something like that so you can test your connection. If you do, and you can log in, there's a firewall permission issue going on here. If you can't, then back to the drawing board but at least you know it's this particular system and not your network.
