I like that in STO crafting is called Research & Development. Unfortunately it's not much different to most MMO's and in the end it's just like baking a cake.

One thing that is missing in R&D is the ability to Upgrade items.

Upgrades can be to the Mark level or Rarity.
  • Upgrading would bind the item automatically.
  • The higher the Rarity/MK, the more % chance to break it (means it drops a level).
  • Allow breaking down of consoles to its basic parts (20% less than schematic list)

I dispise the current trend of making everything worth having bind on pickup.


That said, the prospect of upgrading things through RnD is an appealing one.

Yeah me too, bit I think it's a way of keeping the EC economy in check somewhat.

I'm not sure why missions rewards are not consoles instead of just weapons, but it seems like they could do this. As for crafting, it's pretty much worthless. The only thing that might be appealing about it is to create customization, such as to alter colors or names of things you make.
