Hey all, I thought I'd share some hard-won knowledge about carriers, having played them extensively KDF-side. Any other carrier veterans, please feel free to add your two cents.

1) There are two schools of thought regarding equipping your carrier with weapons: all-beam or all-turret builds. An all beam build allows your carrier to use the built-in subsystem targeting all carriers have, at the expense of sometimes being unable to bring all your weapons to bear on a target, due to the low turn rate most carriers have. An all-turret build, conversely, has a 360 degree field of fire. Obviously, a beam boat carrier will use some variety of Fire At Will, Directed Energy Modulation, and Beam Overload skills. Whilst a turret boat would instead use Rapid Fire and Scatter Volley.

2) Hopefully the devs remembered to itemize the fed doff list with Flight Deck Officers. A very rare Flight Deck doff has a 200% recharge rate for the hangar bays, and can be obtained for free by getting to rank four in Military doff skill. At least it can KDF side. Hopefully the devs haven't forgot to add those for the Feds!

3) A carrier can tank or support. The fighters can add decent dps. It looks like the Caitan carrier has nearly the HP's as an Odyssey, although with a lower turn rate. If you mean to tank, Tac Team and Reverse Shield Polarty are two BOFF skills that would help out a lot. Aux to Dampeners would increase your turn rate, but I usually just use multiple Tac Teams and Reverse Shield Polarity boff skills to keep my shields up.

4) You want to maximize your Auxilary power. The higher your Aux, the quicker your hangar bays recharge. Thus the faster you can put out fighters.

5) You don't need to equip a torpedo. You have fighters for that. You can also drop torp platforms from your carrier's device slots to help out the fighters.

That's all I got right now, hopefully other carrier pilots can fill in what I've forgotten.

I REALLY hope that those buying the new carrier will take heed of this advice. Unfortunately, since the majority of players don't actually visit/read the messageboards.......

Sadly, I also suspect that this will be Odyssey-syndrome again - namely, we'll arrive at ESD/DS9 Friday morning and this new carrier will be almost everywhere.

It happens with all new ships. Everyone will get it and run one for a while.

At least we don't have to gamble for this one...

True - and have to admit, I have a Science Odyssey, though use my Bellerophon (Intrepid) Retrofit far more.

Have to wonder just how many Odyssey's are around now, in compairison to shortly after they were introduced.

When will they release something lighter and faster...
Lots of SLOW big ships, including D'kora, were released recently...

Alternative option:
The devs catch themselves on, realise what a monumentally idiotic doff this is and change the power.

I'm sure Heretic has posted in the DOFF forum that there will be normal Flight Deck Officers for Fed soon as well

I'd be interested to see; what are some standard BOFF layouts for a carrier like this cat one rolling out Thursday?

I agree. I sucked it up and spent like 150k dilithium and got 500 c points to buy 2 character slots just so I can have a Fed sci toon that will fly this new ship (5th c store purchase, finally got forum posting rights! ), and I've been browsing the Klingon Fleetyards, but carrier build threads are nowhere near as meaty as say the escort build thread here in the Fed shipyards. I'm also looking at a sci capt spec, and I'm thinking of maxing out all the Sci space skills save power insulators and the 2 VA sci skills, all 3 of which i consider useless.
I also bought power siphon drones off the exchange. I'm sure hop the new carrier can use them.
