Just curious, if you had to pick one AOE for that, which would you prefer?

depends...you have another torpedo related ability like HY already in your setup? Then use scatter volley.
if that scatter volley would be the third cannon related abillity go for the spread.

i actually manage to have both...scatter volley even twice, if i don't use BO in my build.

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH Dont make me chooooose! I have 2 and 3 of BOTH on my escort at times.

Okay but if I had to choose.....Torpedo. It comes with the handy effects as well as damage. It's murder on pet spam, and it does the job on naked hull if you manage to hit some naked hull.

So in any case where I didn't know what I was getting into if I had to take ONE single target and ONE aoe, it would be cannons for single and torpedo for aoe.

On all my escorts so far I've opted to have at least 1 torp of some kind equipped, but now that I have pretty-pretty quad phaser cannons I would choose cannon spread if I was forced to pick just one.

Unless you're in an Armitage and wanting to take full advantage of the Photon PDS then you are losing huge amounts of DPS by fitting and skilling for a torpedo. Dump the torp, use the skill points elsewhere, fit single cannons and an extra energy tac console, then watch your enemies melt under your 7K DPS (unbuffed) cannon fire, he he almost 8k on my Jem. But that's my build secret so don't tell anyone else

single cannons? 7k dps? unbuffed?

atleast one is not right here...

i really want to see that skilltree + do you use a parser, or do you add the dps numbers of each weapon on your ship?
If i add up all my weapon DPS shown when going with the mouse over the weapon...i reach 6500( 600 from the quantum torpedo)
if i put another DHC or DC instead i could reach at 7200 dps.

i doubt that a all single cannon front build can reach that number. i can only come up with 5000 at 125 weapon power lvl.

That build is rather special, there are lots of points I am not mentioning. It is available on our website for fleet members that make it to fleet rank of Commodore (you need to login to get it). I am not lying, I have no need, try it out for yourself and either join our fleet and find out or work it out yourself, but yes it can be done. My Bug ship can usually beat most other bug ships 1v1 unless I **** up the BOFF ability timings. Bear in mind though that this includes the DPS from the three rear turrerts as they also hit the forward target, all weapons are Mk XII VR ACCx2 Phased Tetryon, that's all I'm adding.

so it is NOT unbuffed...you use buffs...well that explains it. A dual cannon build can hit easily 10k or more, if you count in buffs. so nothing special really about it actually. No need for further explanations then.

by the way, run your weapons at 124 not 125, it's fiddly to get it there and needs a steady mouse hand (why can't we just type in the figures?).
