Hey all!

I was just looking for some advice on what you guys thought was a good choice for a Tactical Captain.

I don't PvP. I PvE and do STFs only pretty much. I am also into a bit of RP. I own every ship in the game, except the Galor, which I have little interest in anyway. The problem is, I'm a bit of a ship collector and with so many ships I cannot decide on which one I want to use as my main ship. I use certain ships in certain situations, i.e. I bring my Jemmie into Elite STFs, but as my main, I am very indecisive. I think my problem is finding a ship that is both efficient for a tac, as well as fits RP for a fleet admiral.

The current ships I am deciding between are:

JAS - Currently using MK 12 Polaron DHC, MK 12 quantum torp fore. 3 MK 12 Polaron turrets aft, and the full Jem set. I like this ship and I recognize it's power and its usefulness in STFs and basically killing everything, but it doesn't feel right as a main ship RP wise.

Ferengi D'Kora - Currently using MK 12 Phaser DHC and MK 12 quantum torp fore, 3 MK 12 Phaser turrets and the wide arc quantum torp aft.

Tholian Recluse Carrier - MK 12 DBB Phased tetyron, Tholian Thermionic Torp, and wide arc quantum fore. 3 MK 12 phased tetryon turrets aft. Set up mostly as a heal boat currently.

Assault Cruiser Refit - Regent Class - 2x MK 12 phaser DBB, MK 12 phaser array, wide angle torp fore. 3 MK 12 phaser turrets, MK 12 quantum aft. I just got the ship, mostly for the quantum torp, but it is a nice looking ship, and I thought maybe I'd give it a shot.

I also have a Tholian Orb Weaver, but I'm not sure how well that works with a tac, I've
mostly used it as a CC based support ship when working with my fleet.
I wasn't really crazy about the Heavy Escort Carrier, but I set it up just to experiment with a full torpedo boats just for giggles. Haven't played around with it that much though.

Most of my ships are set up with Borg Engines/Deflector/Console and MACO MK 12 shields, except the Jem'Hadar. The rest of my consoles I set up depending on the ship and the situation. Bridge Officer and Doff set ups are also changed with ship and situation.

I know anything works in PvE. I'm really just asking for advice on balancing efficiency with RP.
Thanks in advance.

If you're a fleet admiral, then the chances are high that you're going to be commanding a desk somewhere in the Sol system (probably Starfleet Command or Earth Spacedock), bravely staving off the unrelenting hordes of paperwork and facing the dreaded consequences of arthritis.

If you're going to ignore THAT, however, then I would say you have four choices.

1. Assault Cruiser Refit. This is primarily because you already proposed it and it's a nice ship. However, it's pretty run-of-the-mill and while I'm sure it can act fine as a command ship, it's not really an admiral's ship, if you know what I mean.

2. Odyssey (any subclass) - This is the flagship class, and is massive and well-protected. This is probably the most likely candidate for your flagship.

3. Atrox Carrier - This is what I would consider the only truly viable alternative option to the Odyssey, being the Federation's largest carrier (and only dedicated carrier).

4. Dreadnaught (Galaxy-X) - While it's more likely that the Odyssey would fit into this role, the Dreadnaught seems to me to kinda-sorta fit, especially with the cloak and whatnot.

Bottom line - drop the alien ships, they're from entirely different space fleets and probably are only used by special ops captains or for special missions. You want a well-protected, well-known, capital ship with a large crew and a lot of firepower by either proxy (e.g. fighters) or itself. In case you dislike these options, I would advise you away from escorts and science ships, especially escorts. Escorts are glass cannons with a lot of firepower and probably some of them are considered flying coffins by the redshirts, and science ships are poorly-armored, seem to have so-so firepower, and most of their ships seem ill-suited to a command ship role. They are generally NOT going to be putting a fleet admiral in danger unless it's absolutely necessary.

Of course this is all IMO, YMMV.

For RPing and as a flagship, some big cruiser is probably most appropriate. Escorts are great for killing stuff but I imagine as a ship thats all they can do, with limited amenities or facilities for anything unrelated to tactical combat. A cruiser on the other hand has big sensor arrays, heavy communications gear, extensive lab facilities, cavernous cargo bays, and hundreds or thousands of support personnel, all the stuff to function as a mobile space station for field command, coordination, and logistical support of fleet operations. Escorts have the glam, but cruisers are the backbone. Its like the Starfleet version of the Air Force saying, "Fighters make movies, bombers make history."

Also, way back in TNG and DS9 (iirc), Admiral Nechayev got around in an old Excelsior rather than tie up something newer for rear-echelon work. Keeping the newest ships on the front lines and using older vessels in the rear makes more sense after all, so if you wanna follow that theme then a 50 year old Dreadnought (fitted with the latest toys of course) would make sense.

Thanks for the replies.

I didn't even think of the Atrox for some reason. I forgot I had it. That is also a good suggestion.

I know tacs in escorts are the most efficient, that's why I bring them in Elite STFs when I do space, which isn't too often any more. I tend to forget about RP when doing space Elites. I can even RP why I would need to be in more of a strike ship while doing STFs.

I'm more talking about an every day ship.

Now with the Starbases in game (ours is approaching tier 3), I can spend a lot of time there too, but I still want a flagship for the fleet.

You seem to be looking for two things - an RP flagship and a "game play" ship.

In the former, we've had several suggestions.

In the latter, if you are looking for something completely unrelated to the former, then ultimately it's "pick what you want."

Myself, I want to have a ship that's both an RP flagship (I RP with myself mostly, writing out character reactions and whatnot) and a main game play ship, which causes problems since I'm rather indecisive. But if you can and do want to keep the two discrete then basically just pick the most appropriate for the former, and pick whatever you like for the latter.

Fly the Fleet Nova Retrofit.

Its cool, still pretty rare and works well with a tactical captain.

Real admirals don't use massive ships and thousands of people for their own ends.

Efficient for a Tac in PvE is an escort.

There's no way around this.

You can take your pick, but my personal preferences are the Bugship and the HEC (which you didn't seem to like).

That doesn't mean you can't do interesting things or have fun in other ships.

Personally, when I want to play another ship I build a new character around it, specifically to avoid owning a bunch of ships which I will never be able to devote much time to.

I know that's not really an answer as you already have those lockboxes open, but perhaps for future consideration.
