# 1 Contest Results Are Up!
01-08-2010, 06:56 PM
Thank you all so much for your entries to this contest! We have, after much deliberation, decided on our winning names. Of course, some of these names had multiple entries, so...

The person who submitted each winning name first will receive a Digital Deluxe Edition of the game and a poster featuring the ship they named. Additionally, they, and everyone else who submitted the winning name for a particular Starship Class will receive the unique in-game title, "Utopia Planetia Staff." With that, everyone will know you had a part in designing one of our special Tier 5 Starships!

Finally, we can present to you the winning ships:

Check it out!

well gratz to the winners, but I don't agree that the names fit perfectly. Only one I even see that fits is Dervish.

Gratz all

Grats to the winners for sure. I have to admit though that I'm not too fond of the names chosen but them's the breaks I suppose.

I really like all the names, except the Dervish, mostly because I am a little lost on where that comes from. I guess I will have to look that one up. Congrats to the winners though, FREE STO DELUXE....JEALOUS!!!!!

Congrats to the winners, and no offense to them, but...meh. Sorry. Those names just don't do anything for me at all. Then again, I suppose they don't have to, so...whatever.

Again, congats to the winners.

Dervish in modern games (tabletop or videogames) tend to hint at a swift and savage warrior (in a similar vein as berserker or myrmidon would). I remember the dervish crooping up in D&D as being a warrior-woman whom used a scimitar to great effect and had significant movement speed bonuses.

Not correct historically, perhaps, but in today's modern gaming culture (however inaccurate) it fits rather decently. Besides, it's not the only name that's had its significance distorted by time and misconceptions (assassin would be another, heh).

I, for one, feel those are good names for the said ships. I do not mind having lost to them - they'll fit in nicely.

Congratulations to the winners.

That may all be well and true in regard to the gaming world, but Starfleet vessels shouldn't be named after the "gaming" world. Historically speaking, you just named the Tier 5 Escort after a beggar of sorts. And Starfleet would choose its names based on the historical or literal meaning of the word:

der⋅vish  /ˈdɜrvɪʃ/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [dur-vish]
–noun a member of any of various Muslim ascetic orders, as the Sufis, some of which carry on ecstatic observances, such as energetic dancing and whirling or vociferous chanting or shouting.

Origin:
1575–85; < Turk < Pers darvīsh poor man, beggar

So its a loud & obnoxious beggar ship... lol

Congratulations to the winners ...

It would have been nice though to know beforehand that we could use the names of canon ships from the shows...
