The Return of James T. Kirk

Quote:
On Sunday night, William Shatner made a surprise appearance at the 85th annual Oscar Awards. Shatner, in full Captain Kirk uniform, appeared on the large onstage screen as host Seth MacFarlane kicked off the show.
?Enterprise to Dolby Theater?come in Dolby Theater. This is Captain James T. Kirk,? Shatner shouted as he made his first on-screen appearance as Kirk in almost 20-years.

Shatner told MacFarlane ?I?ve come back in time from the 23rd century to stop you from destroying the Academy Awards.? He went on to read newspaper headlines from the future, including ?Seth MacFarlane Worst Oscar Host Ever.?
Quote:
The Captain Kirk uniform Shatner wore was last seen on screen in 1994′s Star Trek: Generations and had been on display at Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas until its closing in 2009.
Regardless of the situation, it was great to see Shatner back in Starfleet uniform once again.

Since about 1999 (when Galaxy Quest was released), Shatner has tried to convince the world that he has been "in on" the joke from the very beginning that he's a ridiculous narcissistic ham who has always taken himself way too seriously. While I appreciate the whimsy they were trying to create, this little interlude proves more than ever that Shatner isn't just a joke, but a bad one too.

I agree. Not a big fan of Seth though.

Oh, he was. He spent pretty much all of TOS and the movies like that, but afterward, mellowed out and made parodies of his own patterns. There's a reason he made peace with the other ST cast members; because he acknowledged how bad he was before.

And besides, it's not like he can't choose to make a surprise 'serious' return. It's just part of the fun, as he's knowingly being serious when he knows he isn't taking himself too seriously like before.

He's never been a pathetic joke. Funny though, yes.
Was named Trek17, but still an author.

Been playing STO since Open Beta, and have never regarded anything as worse than 'meh'. I have nothing against the game/devs, nor any particular wish to talk bad about either, or praise most decisions. Still, it's better to be positive than cynical.

I don't remember when he released his autobiography (maybe the late 80s? I'm pretty sure this was all before ST6), but the whole thing was him admitting to being a complete and total jackass to everyone and apologizing for it.

George Takei's problem, last I read up on it, is that he accepted the apology only to have Shatner squeeze him out of screen time once again in the following Trek movie.

So I say he's both.
