So I've been playing casually for almost a month, and have nearly reached level 40. I'm about to claim my last free ship, and am trying to decide what I want to fly in the endgame.
I played the Temporal Ambassador mission during the 3 year celebration, and got the support cruiser; I played it for a couple missions, but didn't really like it (except for the appearance). I'll be able to use the retrofit soon, but I'm not sure if I want to--is this bind on pickup, or can I try to sell it on the exchange? (I figure it may not sell, as it was a free item and most people probably have it anyway...)

Also, I've been trying to find an answer to this but haven't had much luck: how good are the Captain level ships for endgame play? I've got the tactical escort and am thinking about buying the Long Range Science Vessel retrofit--but I could save the cash and just buy the Captain tier ship if it's good enough for the endgame.

Finally, what would people recommend for the last free ship? I like the science vessels, but they're ugly at this level. I'm leaning toward the Sovereign...

While a skilled player can do alright in endgame PvE stuff in a T4 ship (I knew someone who stuck with a kitbashed T3 Thunderchild (this was before the Armitage) at the VA level because she like the look of the ship so much)) you're going to want the T5 ship.

The T5 ambassador is bound, you can't sell it.

T3 (captain Level) ships can "work" at end game stuff, if you are a good player, but it's generally considered a **** move to bring them into ESTFs and other group content. If you really like their models and layouts, the better way is to join a fleet and get the T5+ fleet versions of them. (~20-25 million EC or 2000 zen, sounds like a lot, but if you know the game systems and play daily it's not hard to farm that up in the current environment within two or three weeks).

The free level 40 ships all work for endgame. Science ships are week in general unfortunately at the current balancing, so you might want to consider the other two ship types. Escorts are easier to be good with than cruisers, but if you enjoy cruisers more then stick with them.

T4 is rear admiral, lower half, actually. T3 is captain.

T1 - Miranda (ensign/Lt)
T2 - Connie (LC)
T3 - Akira (Cmd)
T4 - Defiant (Captain)
T5 - Super Defiant et al. (RA on up)

It gets a little confusing since T5 is really two tiers smashed into one, but the above is how it's always been explained to me.

no it is not...ltd is tier 1...and you still fly the starter ship. T2 is ktd cmdr...T3 cmdr...T4 cpt.
Since cryptic lists them like that, it is that way. I can't show you the list anymore, since it was on the old homepage, which doesn't exist anymore.

First off, the free lvl 40 ships are generally viable, the captain-level ships less so. Or, well, in terms of boff layout you miss out on a lt cmdr slot, so that's not too bad, but you're really looking at a hull handicap. You'll be very squishy, and short one console.

The Ambassador/Support Cruiser Retro is bound to character, so you might as well try it. I find it quite adequate, as cruisers go.

But, for the Federation at least: it doesn't really matter anymore what ship you pick, as you can get all six of them from the exchange, in mirror versions. They're cheap, so you can just pick a different one if you feel the need.

The Assault Cruiser isn't bad btw, in terms of boff layout. Also: while the standard designs for the RSV aren't overly pretty, you can mix and match to create quite a sleek and elegant RSV model. I've got mine built up using the following parts:
Saucer: Luna
Hull: Sol
Nacelles: Sol
Pylons: Polaris
And no mission pod.

Haven't got a screenshot around here somewhere, but it looks very nice.

first of all you cannot sell your ambassador, and you shouldn't. It is a well balanced ship design (stat wise). IMHO better than any free cruiser available.

for PVE i would go for an escort, fastest and easiest way to grind for gear be it normal stfs or missions you havent done up to now.
you can allways go to the exchange and buy a mirror version of some ships, which is cheap actually. some go for less than 100k EC even.

Anyway, the captain tier ships are to a certain extend viable for PVE content at VA level, but i see no real reason to use one when there is the cheap option of T5 mirror ships and later on the fleet ships.

to further answer your post, infos on your career etc...would help.
get familiar with this page and google some builds for the ship you decide upon.

for beginners i wouldn't recommand sci ships at all. on a difficulty scale they would be the most difficult to build and use effetively. Escorts on the other hand are pretty straight forward and easy to build and handle, so are most cruisers, but killing stuff takes longer, thus prolonging singleplayer missions.

To answer your first Question, the Ambassador and Ambassador-R boxes are bound to your Character. They can not be put onto the Exchange or Traded in any way. Personally, I kinda like the Ambassador-R. It's layout seems to fit my overall playstyle.
You mention about going to the Assault Cruiser (Sovereign) as a choice for your Free RA Ship. Basically, the overall stats between the two are about the same (AC has more crew, Amb-R has slightly more hull, Consoles are the same, LCMD and one Lt position flip from ENG to SCI (AC to Amb-R)). Personally, I'd use the Amb-R and use your Free Choice on something else.

As to the the Free RA SCI Ships...
I have Characters that have used both of them. Your Choice really boils down to if you want to be a bit more durable (DSSV) or offensive (Recon SV). Visually, I like the overall looks of the Recon SVs, but no one particular class. I've been able to mix and match the overall parts (usually based around the Sol's Hull) to get something I like.

Now as to using a Defiant Class in the End Game...
In comparison to the other RA Escorts, you wouldn't have as much Hull, the Loss of a LCMD TAC Chair and the third Aft Weapon, and two extra Consoles (one TAC and one ENG or SCI, Ship dependent). While you might be able to get away with it, It's not something I would do personally.

Thank you for the time...
